Juventus Player Faces Trial for Drunk Driving

Daniele Rugani, a defender for Juventus Turin, will go to trial for drunk driving on July 21, 2023, when he tested positive in a breathalyzer test, tripling the allowed limits. The 'Juve' player was driving his Maserati in Turin (north) when police officers stopped him at a routine checkpoint and subjected him to a breathalyzer test. Rugani registered 1.56 on the first test and 1.54 on the second, as reported by Italian media on Friday, tripling the legal limit.

Authorities immediately revoked his driver's license, and he was charged with driving under the influence, an offense that carries a fine of up to 9,000 euros, a prison sentence of up to one year, and a license suspension of up to two years as prescribed by law.

However, as revealed by the mentioned sources, the investigating judge imposed a fine of 5,000 euros, which, if paid, would have allowed him to not only avoid trial but also erase the episode from his criminal record after 2 years.

Instead, the footballer refused to pay that amount intending to perform community service to settle his debt.

Rugani did not submit the required application to start this process within the established deadlines, so inevitably, he will face a trial scheduled to begin on May 23.
