Mathys Tel has named Mesut Ozil as the smartest player of all-time.

The Bayern Munich striker was speaking to Goal on TikTok where he was asked to build his ultimate footballer based on a number of attributes.

As you can imagine, Tel picked the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi for their amazing right and left feet respectively, but when it came to a footballing brain, Tel says that Ozil was the best in history.

Tel will have grown up seeing Ozil starring for both Arsenal and Germany, and it's fair to say that the midfielder left a lasting impression on the Bayern star.

"Right foot?" Tel was asked.

"Cristiano Ronaldo," Tel replied.

"Left foot?" Tel was asked.

"Lionel Messi," Tel replied.

"Football IQ," Tel was asked.

"Mesut Ozil,' Tel replied.

Incredible Tel may not be wrong here.

Ozil did have some flaws in his game it has to be said, he wasn't the strongest, he wasn't the fastest, he wasn't the hardest worker, but he was able to be a truly world-class player because he was four or five steps ahead of anyone else in his brain.

He could see passes that would take five replays for most of us to spot, and the way he could just leave defenders chasing shadows was incredible

There really aren't many players like Ozil around these days. The German may have been the last of his kind in terms of luxury players who could coast through games and still be Man of the Match without breaking a sweat.

Ozil was a beautiful footballer to watch, and as Tel says, he may be the smartest player to ever step onto the pitch.
