Mudryk sparks Chelsea injury fear for Arsenal after worrying moment for Ukraine

Mykhailo Mudryk has worried Chelsea fans after being taken off in the late stages of Ukraine's 2-0 win over North Macedonia on Saturday. The 22-year-old played 88 minutes of the game and helped his side earn the lead in a crucial Euro 2024 qualifying match.

The victory leaves Ukraine second in Group C, which contains England, and crucially three points ahead of Macedonia as well as Italy in third, though Luciano Spalletti's side have two games in hand. Starting alongside Arsenal left-back Oleksandr Zinchenko, Mudryk impressed with some sharp moments.

His afternoon was cut short though after he went down and received treatment with 10 minutes left to play. He did go on to play five minutes more before being taken off ahead of stoppage time. Oleksandr Karavayev replaced him before then scoring the second goal with just minutes to play.

For Mudryk it was a chance to continue his good form having come into a recent spell of minutes under Mauricio Pochettino at Stamford Bridge. He had found himself consistently in the starting lineup ahead of the international break, earning a run of games that he hasn't had under previous managers in England.

The faith put in him by Pochettino was rewarded with his first goal for the club away to Fulham on October 2. Latching onto Levi Colwill's pass, Mudryk opened the scoring at Craven Cottage and showed visible relief having been criticised for failing to live up to the hype since arriving in January.

He was replaced at half-time though with Pochettino revealing a slight injury that had set him back. "He was doing well," he told Sky Sports after the match. "[It is] unlucky that at half time he felt something in his quad but we hope that it is not a big issue and he will be ready for Saturday."

The worry didn't last long though with Mudryk once more included in Chelsea's side for the trip to Burnley last weekend. He was replaced in the starting XI by Raheem Sterling but did come on as a substitute. "He is fully recovered now but we felt we shouldn't take a risk with him, so he starts on the bench with the potential to come on and make an impact for us," his manager said at the time.

With the visit of Arsenal up next for Mudryk and Chelsea there is hope that this setback is not too serious, if anything to worry about soon. "Pain" one fan wrote after the news of his late departure from the game. "Hopefully its not a serious injury or anything," said another.
