Newcastle United legend Shay Given has described Alexander Isak as one of the best strikers in the world - and urged his former club to do all they can to retain the services of the Sweden international.

The former Real Sociedad and Borussia Dortmund frontman has been in stunning form in front of goal this season and is leading United's push for an immediate return to the European competition with some eye-catching performances. Isak has scored 24 goals in 37 appearances in all competitions and became the first United striker to hit 20 Premier League goals in a season since Alan Shearer when he found the net in Saturday's 4-1 win at Burnley.

With Newcastle continuing to battle with the Premier League's profit and sustainability regulations, there has been some talk Isak could be allowed to leave St James Park this summer if a sizeable offer is received. The likes of Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain are both said to be keen admirers of the striker - but Given has insisted most would-be suitors would be unable to afford a move for the Magpies star.

He told The Sun: "Bruno (Guimaraes) has been brilliant but if you had to make a choice, you'd want to keep Isak. He's up there with the best strikers in the world and could play for any club out there, so that's why there is so much noise. All the big clubs will be looking at him and could chance their arm with cheeky bids to see just how much Newcastle do need to sell him. They paid PS60million for him and you see other clubs spending similar sums for forwards who are at panic stations when in goal, fluffing their lines. It's the opposite with Isak, everything just slows down around him, and you wouldn't want to lose someone of that calibre. However, who can afford him now? And if Newcastle sold him for let's say PS120m, they could spend PS50m on someone else who might struggle."

Isak will hope to continue his purple patch in front of goal when Eddie Howe's side return to action with a home game against Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday afternoon.
