Arsenal have opened contacts with Wolves over a potential deal for goalkeeper, Daniel Bentley. The 30-year-old has been identified as a homegrown back-up option for the squad and the dressing room culture. This transfer would see the player return to the North London club having left the youth academy all the way back in 2008.

The player would help fulfil the clubs' homegrown quota and it is also believed that his "great character" is one of the key factors. However, the selling team are in no rush to sell, and will only consider a "suitable bid" as they hope to reinvest the money earned.

Mikel Arteta already has two starter-level goalkeepers in David Raya and Aaron Ramsdale. In fact, the former only recently signed to the club permanently, after his buy clause was triggered in his loan deal. Also, the Gunners recently tied down academy prospect, Karl Hein, to a long-term contract, so there is an abundance of options in this position.

As such, it is perhaps the case that Arsenal are targeting Bentley for his vibrant personality rather than as a serious cover for the first team. The Wolves man only made five Premier League appearances last season, but he has still grown to be a "highly-valued" member of the squad. Furthermore, this signing would fit with the league's homegrown regulations meaning it would be a very good move for the club and in particular, the dressing room - as long as a suitable fee can be agreed.

Who is Bentley? The Englishman initially started his football career as a centre-back but a one-off performance as a goalkeeper caught the eye of an Arsenal scout, after which he signed to the club's academy at just eight years old. In 2008, he left for National League club, Southend United, where he stayed for seven years.

He also played for Brentford and Bristol City in the EFL Championship before moving to Wolves in the top flight in January of 2023. A return to Arsenal for Bentley this Summer would bring him right back to where he first started his football career.
