Liverpool has appointed former Manchester City analyst and coach Aaron Briggs. The 37-year-old is highly rated within the footballing world, and Mikel Arteta was also eager to recruit him at Arsenal before him agreeing to a deal with the Reds.

Briggs will assume the role of elite development coach at the AXA Training Centre, taking over from Vitor Matos who departed the club at the end of the 2023-24 season.

Briggs is the fourth addition to Slot's staff after the club already confirmed the appointments of Spike Hulshoff [assistant coach], Ruben Peeters [lead physical performance coach] and Fabian Otte [goalkeeping coach]. The new Liverpool boss has also suggested he is not done there in terms of his backroom staff.

"So those are the first positions we filled in and I think we are still looking for one or two other positions. Richard [Hughes] and me are calling each other a lot, not only about this but also about the positions we still have to fill in."

In terms of Briggs, it is an exciting acquisition for Liverpool, which beat several Premier League clubs, including Arsenal, to secure his services. Briggs has previously worked at Vfl Wolfsburg, AS Monaco and Man City where he has held a variety of roles. These included assistant coach, tactical analysis coach and performance analyst at both youth and first-team level after rising through the ranks at the Etihad Stadium.

In terms of his role on Merseyside, Briggs will be key in ensuring a clear link between the youth academy and the first team at Anfield, which has already seen so much success in recent years.

Trent Alexander-Arnold, Conor Bradley and Jarell Quansah are some of the more recent examples of the strong academy Liverpool has in place, with Lewis Koumas, Jayden Danns and Bobby Clark also now pushing for a spot in the senior squad. Briggs has been appointed to ensure the pathway and transition is as seamless as possible from youth level to Slot's squad - which now has even more importance given the pure profit clubs can make from academy sales.

Liverpool.com says: Slot is now in search of a first-team coach to complete his backroom team, with former Everton defender Jonny Heitinga touted as a potential option the club could turn to.
