Declan Rice set for new Arsenal role if £51m transfer completed

The potential signing of Mikel Merino could impact a number of players within the Arsenal squad. The Spain international has been linked with a move to the Gunners after impressing for Spain at Euro 2024. He scored the winner during their 2-1 extra-time win over Germany on Friday.

According to The Athletic, the Gunners want to sign a new central midfielder this summer and Merino has emerged as someone they are interested in. It's added that Mikel Arteta is a big fan of the player's 'talent and physicality' and believes he can add an extra dimension to the Arsenal squad ahead of next season.

If the Gunners did get a deal over the line to sign Merino, his arrival could have a major impact on the rest of the squad. In particular, Declan Rice could be affected. Last season, the 25-year-old was predominantly used as the defensive midfielder in the three-man midfield system. However, he ended the season playing further forward in the more advanced role with Thomas Partey utilised as the No.6.

But should the Gunners go and sign Merino to be used as the left sided No.8, Rice would have no choice but to stay as the deepest midfielder. This is because Martin Odegaard is more than likely going to start as the other more advanced midfielder alongside Merino, leaving Rice as the No.6.

Despite his position, Rice scored seven goals and added nine assists in 38 Premier League appearances. That is a very productive number for someone playing as deep as him, but Rice can replicate that next season even if Merino is signed, though he may be restricted from making late runs into the box.

Last season, while Rice would have the license to dart forward and make marauding runs into forward areas, often either Jorginho or Partey would fill in as the deeper midfielder when out of possession. But Merino's arrival would not allow Rice to do that, as he is someone who likes to advance into the box as seen by his goal against Germany. The Real Sociedad man rose highest to guide Dani Olmo's cross into the corner after drifting beyond his marker, leaving Manuel Neuer stranded.

Others impacted by Merino would be Emile Smith Rowe, who was sometimes used in the left central midfield berth last season when required. The Englishman has been linked with a move away from the Gunners with his future uncertain, having started just three Premier League matches last season. His game time could even be further reduced if Merino comes through the doors.

Meanwhile, Partey could be set for an exit from Arsenal having struggled with injuries last season. He returned for the latter end of the season and played an important role, but Arteta could use the sale of Partey to help bring in Merino. Jorginho is the other recognised first-team central midfielder at the club, but his role would likely not change. He can be used anywhere across the middle of the park.
