Mikel Arteta will be looking to add strength to his Arsenal side this summer after seeing them fall just short of the Premier League title last season. The Gunners spent plenty last summer, meaning they are going to have to balance the books this summer, but they are also likely to add quality in a number of key areas.
Bologna and Italy star Riccardo Calafiori looks to be the most likely arrival early this summer, and with that in mind, we have put together a possible depth chart for if -and perhaps when - the Italian arrives. Just as a reminder, players can feature more than once on a depth chart depending on their versatility, and the order is from top to bottom based on the players Arteta is likely to select.
GoalkeepersDavid Raya
Aaron Ramsdale
Karl Hein
Having penned a permanent deal, David Raya will be Arsenal's first choice goalkeeper again this season after an impressive campaign of last. Ramsdale could well be sold and replaced with a new number two, but he is the provisional number two as things stand.
Right-backBen White
Takehiro Tomiyasu
Thomas Partey
Jurrien Timber
Ben White holds the starting shirt on the right side of defence, but Takehiro Tomiyasu will want to push the Englishman for a starting role. If injuries strike, Thomas Partey has shown an ability to cover on the right side, even if he is not the ideal option, and the same applies for Timber.
Centre-backWilliam Saliba
Gabriel Magalhaes
Jurrien Timber
Riccardo Calafiori
Saliba and Gabriel are clearly Arteta's primary centre-back options, but competition could be rife next season. Timer will have a full pre-season under his belt and will be pushing for a starting spot. Calafiori showed good form at the Euros and will also be a starting-level player if he does sign. Although, he will likely start the campaign at the bottom of the centre-back depth chart.
Left-backJakub Kiwior
Oleksandr Zinchenko
Riccardo Calafiori
Kieran Tierney
Jurrien Timber
Left-back is an interesting one. Kiwior showed real promise last season but Zinchenko will want to get back to his best form, and he will surely have a big part to play. Calafiori looks set to be an option on the left, as will be Timber, who has played on that side. Tierney is likely to move on.
Defensive midfieldDeclan Rice
Thomas Partey
Albert Sambi Lokonga
Declan Rice has a starting spot locked up, while Jorginho looks set to be his partner in a double pivot, although Arsenal could arguably do with more strength there in the long-term. Partey will also feature a fair amount. Lokonga is likely to move on.
Attacking midfieldMartin Odegaard
Leandro Trossard
Kai Havertz
Emile Smith Rowe
Fabio Vieira
Odegaard is another who has a guaranteed starting spot as captain and top performer, while Trossard can also make a big impact there. Havertz can certainly play that role but will likely play higher unless a new striker is signed. Smith Rowe is being mooted for an exit, while Vieria remains on the periphery and could be loaned out again.
Left wingGabriel Martinelli
Leandro Trossard
Kai Havertz
Gabriel Jesus
Martinelli is the starter on the left, while Trossard will be pushing for minutes. Havertz can also play there, but he has proved his best football comes through the middle.
Right wingBukayo Saka
Reiss Nelson
Kai Havertz
Leandro Trossard
Gabriel Jesus
Saka is another who has his spot locked down, but there is no doubting that Arteta needs more options out wide, both on the right and left, but especially on the right, as is proven here. Arsenal really only have two out and out options, given two of these players are left-footed.
StrikerKai Havertz
Gabriel Jesus
Eddie Nketiah
Arsenal also need a striker this season to add competition here, with Nketiah being linked with a move away. Havertz and Jesus will continue to battle it out, but it has been suggested for some time that Arteta should land a goalscoring striker, and it seems he will look to do so this summer.
