Newcastle v Arsenal: Pictures

Newcastle claimed a massive win over Arsenal on Saturday night, but Anthony Gordon's goal was clouded in controversy.

Jacob Murphy's effort had flown across the face of goal, with Joe Willock just able to prevent it from going out for a goal-kick down by the corner flag. The midfielder turned and fired a cross back into the box, with Gunners keeper David Raya flapping and missing it.

Joelinton then outmuscled Gabriel, with the ball dropping to Gordon, who fired home. Stuart Attwell awarded a goal, but the game was delayed by several minutes as VAR Andy Madley took a close look at multiple incidents in the lead-up to Gordon's goal.

But Stockley Park, the base for the VAR officials, insisted that there were no clear angles to prove the ball had gone out of play after Madley confirmed it stayed in. A graphic from beIN Sports appeared to prove that that was the right decision, with a silver of the ball over the line.

Next, he checked for a foul on Gabriel by Joelinton, with the Newcastle star having jumped into the back of the Brazilian defender, leaving him sprawled on the floor. But Madley informed Attwell that no foul had in fact been committed after several checks of the incident.

But when checking for an offside, Stockley Park revealed Madley had no clear camera angle at his disposal to see if and when Joelinton had knocked the ball towards his team-mate. During commentary on Sky Sports, pundit Gary Neville agreed with each decision Madley made.

"Well he's just gone up front Gordon, they think it's gone out, but... it's close, it's very, very close. But what's not in doubt is the goal itself. Raya underneath it, he makes a mess of it, Gabriel might be whining about a push in the back but there's nothing in that for me," he said.

"Just let me know when they're finished, will ya? I'm done with this, I'm finished. Gabriel has gone forward himself to head the ball, throwing his legs into Joelinton so it's not a push. He could be offside now, I'm not sure. I haven't got a clue."

While Neville was happy for the goal to stand, Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta was left furious. He labelled the decision to award the goal "embarrassing" as he launched an extraordinary rant.

"Embarrassing what happened - how this goal stands, in the Premier League - this league we say is the best in the world. I've been 20 years in this country and now I feel ashamed. It's a disgrace and there's too much at stake here. We are trying to do incredible things and be at the highest level each week," he fumed.

"When we're not good enough I hold my hands up and take responsibility. The outcome is nowhere near the level this league needs to have and the way this league is getting competed in. It's not good enough. I feel embarrassed to be part of this.

"I have praised my players for the way they played and competed in this stadium against this team. The result should not be what it is - there are many reasons for that. If there was a team looking to win the game today it was Arsenal."
