Gers clock to sign 30-cap Scotland international ticking after pre-contract transfer claim

Philippe Clement will need to address the various issues in the Rangers squad over the next few transfer windows but signing home grown players needs to be a priority with Scott McKenna an easy decision to make.

There maybe isn't a desperate need for a central defender just yet, however, the Scotland international is available on a pre-contract agreement in January.

If Rangers want to add the former Aberdeen defender to their squad, they will need to move quickly though with Fenerbahce said to be interested in signing Scott McKenna, according to Kisa Dalga.

Leon Balogun's contract will be up in the summer and, despite impressing under Clement, it doesn't make much sense to re-sign a player who will be 36 when next season kicks off.

That leaves Connor Goldson, Ben Davies, John Souttar and Leon King as the four designated options.

It was Davies that was linked with a move away in the summer, Stoke City trying at the last minute to push through a loan move, and it would make sense to try and move him on again to free up space.

The alternative option is that, given Souttar's reliability issues, Rangers might consider Scott McKenna as someone who could strengthen the squad in addition to what we already have.

Rangers have missed out on a series of players who are classed as association trained in recent years and McKenna has shown in the Premier League, and in his 30 caps for Scotland, that he has improved since leaving the SPFL.

As Ryan Kent will testify, the bigger wage bill doesn't always equate to happiness when it comes to playing in Turkey and the 27-year old will have a decision to make.

He's a regular for the national team but, if he isn't playing, that place would be at risk.

Also, approaching his peak, he might want to win trophies and have something to show for his career.
