John McGinn is looking forward to “proving people wrong” in Scotland’s must-win clash

Scotland's EURO2024 campaign hasn't been smooth sailing so far. That 5-1 defeat to the Germans in Munich on the tournament's opening night feels so long ago, as does their 1-1 draw with Switzerland in Koln - but their participation in the tournament could come to a close on Sunday, unless they pick up three points against Hungary in Stuttgart.

The Tartan Army would make history if they do manage a win against the Magyarok, progressing to the knockout stages of a major tournament for the first time in the country's history.

Ahead of the decisive must-win clash in south-western region of Baden-Wurttemberg, Steve Clarke and John McGinn addressed the media.

What did Steve Clarke say? In the aftermath of that Munich mauling, Clarke admitted that he "maybe gave too much information" and could have "clouded the players a little bit on the pitch in terms of what we do with the ball."

The 60-year-old has learnt his lesson ahead of their meeting with Hungary on Sunday, telling reporters in his pre-match press conference that "we will try to underplay this one - if you can ever underplay a game of this magnitude. We will try to underplay it a little bit and make sure we are ready to go come kick-off."

Given the competitive nature of Group A at EURO2024, Scotland have always expected that they'd need to muster a result in their final group stage clash - and they're no strangers to being in this position. They required a positive result against Croatia at EURO2020, falling to a 3-1 defeat at Hampden Park that ultimately brought their tournament involvement to a premature end.

As for what he envisages from Scotland's Hungarian opponents, Clarke admits that "they've got talented players, but hopefully we can stifle them."

"We're expecting a difficult game and I'm sure the Hungarians are also expecting a difficult game from us. We're two similar teams, two similar line-ups and two similar systems, hopefully ours is slightly better than theirs."

What did John McGinn say? Reflecting on Scotland's EURO2020 group stage exit, Aston Villa's John McGinn offered a damning verdict: "I don't think we really approached those games with the right mentality."

"It was a completely new thing preparing for the European Championships," he continued, citing "the magnitude of it being at home."

In Germany though, McGinn accepts that Scotland "had a poor start, [followed by] a good second game which could have been better with three points."

"I don't think a lot of people in Europe believe we can take that next step, but a lot of us in the dressing room feel we can. We're more excited and keen to get going rather than feeling any pressure."
