'I thought': Gary Neville and Roy Keane share honest thoughts on Ezri Konsa's display for England
Source:Football News,

Both Gary Neville and Roy Keane have now been reacting to Aston Villa defender Ezri Konsa's 78 minutes for England against Switzerland.

Konsa earned his sixth cap for his country under Gareth Southgate last Saturday and coped with his role incredibly well.

Under Unai Emery, Konsa has only played as part of a back three on occasion, more often pushed out to the right as a full-back.

But part of the appeal to Southgate of including Konsa in his squad will have been the Villa defender's versatility, who could even play on the left if asked.

And although it seems likely that Marc Guehi will return against the Netherlands on Wednesday, Konsa only enhanced his reputation on the international stage, a player who should be a permanent member of the England squad moving forwards.

The duo were both very complimentary of Konsa's minutes, and Keane admitted that he was never worried about the Villa defender's competency playing at such a level.

Roy Keane thought 'brilliant' Ezri Konsa would never let England down Konsa was eventually sacrificed for the likes of Cole Palmer and Eberechi Eze when England went 1-0 down, but the substitution wasn't a reflection of his individual display.

Sharing his thoughts, Neville said: "I thought he did really well.

"Before the game you are looking at a defender and I'm thinking, you're playing left sided centre-back of a three and he plays right-back and right centre-back for Villa, so it's a different position.

"I thought he did everything really, really well. He was composed."

Keane then added: "He is on the back of a brilliant season for Villa, so on the one hand we shouldn't be that surprised.

"I wouldn't be looking at him thinking I'm worried about him."

Of course, it will be interesting to see how Villa's own defence evolves next season with the addition of Ian Maatsen.

The Dutch international has strong attacking instincts and is perhaps better suited to a wing-back role rather than lining up as a full-back.

Therefore, it will be interesting to see if Emery leans on a system with three centre-backs more at Aston Villa next season, which would evidently suit Konsa's skill set.
