Jaden Philogene at centre of £16m transfer hijack as Premier League future takes surprise twist
Source:Birmingham Live

Jaden Philogene's anticipated transfer to the Premier League a year after leaving Aston Villa has taken a significant turn with Everton now reaching a PS16m agreement to hijack a deal with Ipswich Town.

The 22-year-old made the decision to leave Villa - where he is still highly regarded - and join Hull City to get more game time, and some outstanding performances at the MKM Stadium boosted his profile.

He had appeared destined to join newly-promoted Ipswich in the coming days after a deal was agreed with the Tigers, but Kieran McKenna's side were not the only ones to hold an interest. Now one of those rivals clubs - Everton - have played their hand.

That is according to The Times' Paul Joyce, who says the Toffees are confident on getting their man after settling on a PS16m fee with Hull. Philogene's agent has also been photographed at Everton's Finch Farm training ground.

It is a complex situation, given the very different natures of the deals said to have been agreed by the two Premier League clubs. On the one hand, Everton are negotiating a single-player transfer, whereas Ipswich were hoping to bring Philogene to Portman Road alongside team-mate Jacob Greaves.

Both players were part of a deal worth PS35m plus add-ons and the defender had already made tracks to complete his medical at Portman Road. Now, Everton's move for the former Villa winger will throw this part of the Ipswich deal into jeopardy.

Philogene was also linked with Barcelona earlier in the summer, although it has since been claimed his preference is to remain in England but progress to a the top-flight club.

Villa did insert a buy-back clause into the deal to sell Philogene to Hull that would have allowed them to purchase the player for PS1m less than the total Everton have now offered. However, that would have only come into play if the Tigers had gained promotion to the Premier League.
