Virgil van Dijk 's reaction to Ollie Watkins' stoppage time England semi-final winning goal has been shared on social media. The Dutch stalwart's face told a thousand words.

Netherlands opened the scoring after just seven minutes against the run of play when Xavi Simons slammed home an effort from the edge of the box into the top corner. But England swiftly leveled the game from the penalty spot as Harry Kane converted from 12 yards after a contentious decision was made to award the penalty following a VAR intervention.

Watkins then wrote his name into the England history books in the 91st minute as he controlled Cole Palmer's driven ball before rolling Stefan De Vrij and firing an effort low into the far corner. As the Aston Villa striker turned to celebrate, he was snapped running off with a distraught Van Dijk in the background. The defender stood with his hands on his mouth and a disconsolate look on his face as the chance of international glory passed him by, possibly for the final time.

Van Dijk was left enraged after the game as the Liverpool man blew his lid in the post-match interview as he ranted about the referee's controversial decision to award England a penalty, he said: "I don't know what I should say, I don't know if I should say something about this. I said it outside to our Dutch media, it says it all that the ref went in quite quickly after the game and we had no time to shake his hand."

"They keep changing so many things, small changes that could have big impacts. Let them [the referees] come here and explain themselves like we [the players] have to do when we do something wrong. I think that might be something."

"I do everything to win and then it gets emotional at the end, because you know it's over. Especially in the second half, I had the feeling that he would fall on the other side. But Watkins then perhaps gets a bit too much space and he finishes it well.

"I have no idea at the moment (about his future). I will think carefully this summer about what I want at club level and as an international. Then we will go for it again, but first recover from this."
