Unai Emery is preparing Aston Villa to face Crystal Palace

HomeStats & Tactics Josh Edwards Wed 30 October 2024 21:47, UK

Aston Villa exited the EFL Cup at the hands of Crystal Palace at Villa Park with Jhon Duran on the scoresheet in a 2-1 defeat.

Unai Emery's side got off to a terrible start, finding themselves 1-0 down after just eight minutes with Ebere Eze squeezing a header into the near post at Villa Park on Wednesday (30 October).

Duran continued his excellent form equalising for Villa 15 minutes later and impressing with his overall performance yet again.

His goal proved to be nothing but a consolation as substitute Daichi Kamada scored what would prove to be the winning goal in the second half.

Here, Villa News rates the Villans players out of 10 after their EFL Cup exit , with the help of FotMob stats.

Joe Gauci - 4

MORE VILLA STORIES

Gauci never looked particularly convincing in the Villa goal having conceded two goals from an xGOT of just 0.71. Tyrone Mings was visibly angry at his 'keeper during the first half.

Kosta Nedeljkovic - 6

The Serbian struggled to provide much defensive cover, failing to make a single tackle although his 80 touches show how eager he is to get involved in the game. Nedeljkovic completed 85 per cent of his 53 attempted passes.

Diego Carlos - 5

The Brazillian won just one of his three attempted tackles during the game as part of a Villa defence that were undone on too many occasions.

Tyrone Mings - 6

On his return from injury, Mings looked sharp and showcased his leadership qualities. However, he was wasteful in possession at times, recording a 30 per cent accuracy with long balls attempted but his 88 per cent aerial duel win rate often relieved pressure on the Villa defence.

Ian Maatsen - 5

Maatsen has a lot more to offer than what he showcased against Palace. The Dutch defender recorded a 0 per cent cross accuracy from six attempted crosses and failed to complete a successful dribble throughout.

A 30 per cent dribble success rate was the story of his night. The winger constantly tried to make things happen when on the ball but on too many occasions it didn't work out. Of the 19 duels he was involved in, he lost 14.

Boubacar Kamara - 7

The Frenchman enjoyed a solid first half although had less of an impact in the second. His 88 per cent pass accuracy kept Villa ticking over in midfield but it proved to be less than enough.

John McGinn - 7

McGinn boasted an impressive 94 per cent pass accuracy in the game but struggled to impact the game defensively. With just two successful duels out of seven, Villa needed that added defensive cover in midfield and McGinn didn't provide it.

Leon Bailey - 6

Bailey was constantly trying to make things happen for Emery's side and got the assist for Duran's goal but he was part of a creative three that failed to create for the Colombian in the second half.

Emi Buendia - 5

Buendia struggled to create for Villa against Palace, with just one chance created recording an xA of just 0.03. Villa perhaps didn't get the Argentine involved enough in the game with him having just 39 touches in the 79 minutes he played.

Jhon Duran - 9

Duran got his side back in the game with a goal that had an xG of just 0.08 although Matt Turner will have been disappointed to be beaten. His overall performance was excellent although Villa failed to create the chances and suffered as a consequence.

Lamare Bogarde (On for McGinn 79 ) - N/A

The youngster had little involvement in the 10 minutes he was on the pitch as Villa sought a way back into the game. He completed 100 per cent of his attempted passes.

Kadan Young (On for Buendia 79)- N/A

Replaced Buendia with ten minutes to go but saw just four touches of the ball.

Jamaldeen Jimoh (On for Bailey 79) - N/A

Made just two touches after coming on.

In other Aston Villa news, Emi Martinez deserves his second successive Yashin Trophy for "pushing the borders" of goalkeeping, according to Ian Darke.
