Aston Villa were thrashed 4-1 away at Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday afternoon, torn apart in an uncharacteristic second-half capitulation.

Morgan Rogers' 32nd-minute opener edged Villa ahead but Unai Emery's men were stunned as Dominic Solanke's brace, Brennan Johnson's tap-in and James Maddison's inch-perfect free-kick completed an impressive turnaround for the hosts at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The clash began slowly as Spurs dominated possession but Villa defended strongly to resist most advances into the box. Neither team managed a single shot on target in the first half an hour and the Villans seemed content allowing the hosts to shoot from range.

Villa's patience in the early exchanges paid off as Rogers broke the deadlock, reacting quickest to poke home in a goalmouth scramble. Lucas Digne's inswinging corner was flicked on by Spurs right-back Pedro Porro and deflected into the danger zone by Bentancur. Goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario made a strong save on the line but Rogers was there to finish for 1-0.

Despite Villa having less of the ball, Emery's men had the better of the chances and probably deserved their lead heading into the break. Amadou Onana had a great opportunity just a minute before Rogers' goal as he struck the post with a close-range header, while Ollie Watkins scuffed a shot wide before the interval.

Johnson equalised for Tottenham just four minutes into the second half, converting at the far post from an excellent Heung-Min Son cross. Spurs' captain whipped the ball in behind Villa's entire back four and Johnson, goal-side of Digne, finished cooly. Solanke then went close to putting his side ahead shortly afterward, firing into the ground and asking an awkward save from Emi Martinez.

Spurs' third goal was equally as clinical as Richarlison crossed in low from the left, squeezing the ball through Carlos' legs for Solanke to hammer home at the far post. The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium exploded with noise as a frustrated Emery thrashed the air, in disbelief at his team's lack of composure. James Maddison then added salt to Villa's wounds in stoppage time, whipping a peach of a free-kick into the top right corner to secure Spurs the win.

Villa suffer only their second defeat of the new Premier League season. Here's how the players rated out of 10.

Aston Villa player ratings vs TottenhamEmiliano Martinez - 5

Not tested in the first half but made a great save to deny Solanke in the 51st minute. Couldn't do a great deal about any of the four goals conceded but still a day to forget.

Matty Cash - 6 (off 60')

Got stuck in throughout the first half but struggled with his passing, often skewing through ball attempts well away from Watkins. Taken off with an injury concern.

Ezri Konsa - 5

Did well at centre-half but struggled when moved to right-back when Cash was forced off. Played Solanke onside for 2-1 and was nowhere to be seen for the striker's second.

Pau Torres - 4

Should've positioned himself better for both of Solanke's goals and gave the ball away in the lead-up to the second. Nowhere near as composed as usual when passing out from the back.

Lucas Digne - 6

Allowed Johnson goal-side for Spurs' equaliser but provided great width down the left. Crossed in brilliantly for an early Watkins chance and made a nice block to deny Johnson on the counter.

Amadou Onana - 6

Got heavily involved in the first half, throwing himself into challenges to win back possession and often rescuing Villa under pressure, escaping Spurs' high press on the half-turn. Struck the post with a header for the first big chance of the game, too, but faded away a little in the final 30 minutes.

Youri Tielemans - 6 (off 81')

Unable to create anywhere near as many chances as usual as Spurs' midfield three battled hard to limit his space.

John McGinn - 5 (off 80')

Battled hard and showed off a decent passing range at the end of the first half but lost his way before being replaced.

Jacob Ramsey - 6 (off 81')

Acted as Villa's main outlet in the first half as he took on defenders with confidence and linked up effectively with Digne. Unable to have the same impact after the break.

Morgan Rogers - 7 (off 69')

Scored the opening goal with some great anticipation on the goal line. Dribbled forward relentlessly as usual but had to go off with a knock.

Ollie Watkins - 5

Had mixed success with his hold-up play up against Romero and Dragusin, and missed a decent chance at the end of the first period. Clattered into by Pedro Porro in the second half, prompting the first yellow card of the match.

Diego Carlos - 3 (on 60')

A horrendous appearance off the bench. Turned inside out by Kulusevski for Solanke's first goal, nut-megged by Richarlison's cross for Solanke's second and gave away the free-kick for Maddison's stunner.
