Aston Villa shot themselves in the foot and suffered a damaging defeat to Tottenham in the Premier League on Sunday.

On what was Unai Emery's 53rd birthday, Aston Villa lost their second game in as many days and have suffered back-to-back losses for the first time since February 2023.

Morgan Rogers opened the scoring for the away side after Tottenham made a mess of a corner and the ball was bundled home by the Englishman.

That was the only shot on target in what was a pretty poor and action-drained first half of football from both teams, but everything changed in the second.

Ange Postecoglou's side scored within minutes of the restart, before Tottenham made a few changes, including some forced.

Captain Son Heung-min didn't look like a happy bunny when he was subbed off for Richarlison just before the hour mark and that mood swung to the opposition as well.

Morgan Rogers unhappy at being subbed during Aston Villa's defeat at Tottenham Rogers was on the end of a crunching tackle and required treatment on the pitch, before he hobbled back up to his feet.

In the meantime, Villa's super-sub Jhon Duran was told to get ready and you could see him taking off his bib in order to come on.

But as soon as Rogers saw his number show up, he cut a frustrated look and commentator Rob Hawthrone stated that the call was 'taken out of his hands', as he told Sky Sports Premier League (03/11/24).

"Morgan Rogers not entirely convinced that he had to come off," said Hawthrone. "But sometimes players don't know what's best for them, do they?! The decision had to be taken out of his hands."

Even after the full-time whistle, pictures panned to Rogers getting off his seat and he was still limping, so that isn't a good sign.

Overall in the game, not many Villa players can hold their heads up high, but Rogers was rated 7.40 by WhoScored.

On top of that, Villa suffered a late equaliser against Bournemouth last week, so the team are now in a bit of a rut at the wrong time.

But one thing this team has done well under Emery is not let results - positive or negative - become overreactive and the same needs to happen here.
