Aston Villa match remarkable Man City feat as Douglas Luiz shows class on and off the pitch
Source:Birminghammail

Aston Villa extended their remarkable Premier League winning run at home to 13 games by defeating Fulham 3-1 at Villa Park, which has consolidated the club's position in the top five heading into the November international break.

The victory was Villa's 14th at home in 2023, which is as many as in the previous two calendar years combined. Youri Tielemans made his full league debut on Sunday and helped break the deadlock as it was his cross which Antonee Robinson stuck in the back of his own net 25 minutes in.

John McGinn doubled the host's lead as he fired beyond Bernd Leno from outside the box, before Ollie Watkins scored a third just after the hour mark. Raul Jimenez scored a consolation goal for Fulham as he tapped in Robinson's pass after the left-back beat Villa's offside trap.

Here are the talking points from Villa's win over Fulham...

GOALS, GOALS, GOALS

Villa have become only the second team in Premier League history to score three or more goals in each of their first six Premier League home matches at the beginning of a season. It was a feat which Man City also achieved last season as they went on to win the league title ahead of Arsenal.

Emery has built an offensive structure which allows his forward players to thrive, like Waktins, who bagged his 11th goal for the campaign in all competitions on Sunday. Only City's Erling Haaland and Liverpool's Mo Salah boast more goal involvements than Watkins this calendar year, with the Villa striker directly involved in 26 Premier League goals across 2023 (18 goals, eight assists).

Before City's 4-4 draw with Chelsea, Villa had scored more goals than any other side in the English top-flight, netting 29 times in the first 12 games.

"It's special for everyone," Emery said after full-time. "We connected very well with our supporters. We had control of the game in the first half. It was important for us to get the first goal [in the second half] but when they scored we needed to try to control the game and be consistent in our game plan and we were.

"We are the best scoring team in the league. It's important because we're showing our potential but we have to be stronger defensively.

"We had more control in the first half. We lost control of the game [at one stage]. They were trying to attack us and get behind and push a lot with some players."

McGinn, as you could have predicted, was the driving force behind Villa's latest victory. He had the unenviable task of dealing with Joao Palhinha in the middle of the park, but he bullied the Portuguese.

The Fulham midfielder resorted to making five fouls in the match in a desperate bid to stop McGinn's influence in the game. Like us fans, Emery loves McGinn too, and sung the Scot's praises after full-time.

"He is playing always being positive and trying to help the team," the Villa boss said. "We're demanding of him. The fans love him a lot.

"It's fantastic because he's responding on the pitch and connecting with them and always playing with the game plan we have. He's adding goals. He's a very good example for everyone."

ONE EYE ON TOTTENHAM

Emery will now enjoy some downtime in the international break, but not before he and his staff study Sunday's win. He pledged to prepare for Tottenham with "full energy" next week, despite admitting his mind will be on the Spurs match even if he tries to relax in the coming days.

"Now today we can be happy and optimistic about where we are," Emery said. "But you have to be very consistent. It's very difficult.

"We'll try to work hard to be there. It's always another challenge we're facing. Now we're very happy.

"We want to rest and come back next week to try to be in the same way we are doing. Facing Tottenham away is a big challenge. They are playing very well."

Villa are free-scoring at the moment and are one of the most entertaining teams to watch in the division. However, Emery's side are struggling to keep clean sheets.

They've only kept two clean sheets in their last 14, which will come as a surprise to many given how well Villa defended last season.

"I like to score goals, I like to be a team who scores lots of goals, I like it when players are adding goals for the team," Emery said. "Then, of course, if we keep a clean sheet then it is better.

"Last season, our success was more through clean sheets and then scoring goals, than scoring goals and not keeping clean sheets.

"I want to take the balance. I am very happy about scoring goals and if we are conceding just one goal and we are winning, then we can be demanding as well with everybody and we have to accept."

DOUGLAS LUIZ SHOWS CLASS ON AND OFF THE PITCH

Luiz won't take the headlines after Villa's latest win because the consistency of his performances are so high. He is an absolute joy to watch week in, week out. He celebrated his recall to the Brazil national team on Monday and their boss Fernando Diniz claimed he has the ability to become a mainstay in the Selecao.

It was his quality and craft which opened the Fulham defence up for Villa's opening goal, as he clipped a cute pass to Lucas Digne. The left-back then ran down the line and picked out a ball across the box, which Robinson steered into his own net under pressure from Moussa Diaby.

Luiz showed his class off the pitch on Sunday too. As both sets of players lined up facing the Trinity Road Stand before kick-off, Luiz unzipped his matchday jacket and gave it to his young mascot to keep. It was a lovely moment to start off what proved to be another enjoyable afternoon for the Villa.
