Birmingham City are, as expected, set to replace outgoing manager John Eustace with Wayne Rooney, a reputable report has now confirmed.

The Manchester United and England legend departed Major League Soccer outfit DC United last week and spoke of his desire to return to his home nation.

Rooney said that "nothing was lined up" and he was returning to be with his family but it appears a new job was in the offing all along.

Reliable transfer news reporter Fabrizio Romano reports Rooney is "expected to join as the new head coach after leaving DC United".

Birmingham have received a major backlash for relieving Eustace of his duties as the 43-year-old has overseen major progress in a short space of time.

Blues finished 17th in the Sky Bet Championship last campaign despite having limited resources and they currently sit in sixth heading into the international break.

Rooney guided Derby County to a record of 14 wins, 13 draws and 19 defeats during the 2021/22 season but saw the Rams relegated due to a points deduction. They would have stayed up with 55 points otherwise.

On the whole across his spells with Derby and DC United, Rooney has managed 137 games, winning 39, drawing 34 and losing 64. His favoured formation is a 4-2-3-1.
