Liverpool are seriously interested in signing Kalvin Phillips with the Manchester City midfielder set to leave in January.

Recent reports suggest the England international is closer and closer to making a move when the transfer window opens in the new year.

Kalvin Phillips transfer latest The i reports that Phillips seems "increasingly likely" to switch loyalties from Man City with Liverpool one of the interested clubs.

Also interested are Newcastle United, West Ham United and Everton while Bayern Munich are credited with a "tentative" interest after missing out on Joao Palhinha.

The powerful central midfielder, who was pivotal in England's Euro 2020 campaign, is rapidly gaining interest from several Premier League rivals.

According to transfer expert Alex Crook, Liverpool had expressed a keen interest in securing Phillips over the summer.

"It feels a bit like the calm before the storm, not just with Liverpool and with the transfer window in general, I really think it will ramp up as we head into next week and clubs maybe get a little bit desperate towards the end of the window."

Klopp did not sign him but he sees Phillips as a long-term replacement for Fabinho who left for the Saudi Pro League in the summer.

The Brazilian leaving left a hole in the middle of the Reds' midfield and Phillips could be a valuable replacement.

The 27-year-old's aggressive pressing style and robust defensive capabilities align well with Liverpool's philosophy and Klopp's preference for highly physical, adaptable midfielders.

His contract with Manchester City is only due to expire in June 2028.

Could Liverpool sign Phillips from Manchester City? City could potentially be coaxed into selling to Liverpool but given the length of his contract and the premium for selling to a rival, it will be difficult to sign the PS160,000/week no.6.

Crucially, with the Leeds-born player's ability to be both a midfield enforcer and a deep-lying playmaker, the Reds could significantly strengthen their hand in the Premier League title race.

As the January transfer window nears, speculation will only ramp up surrounding Phillips' future.

What remains clear is that the desire from Liverpool is concrete and the desire from Phillips to leave creates the potential for a move to Anfield.

Anfield Central will continue to closely follow updates in this unfolding story.

With Liverpool holding its cards close to its chest, it remains to be seen whether Phillips will don the famous red shirt come January.
