Can Kevin McDonald conquer City's caretaker curse?

Celebrated would be the wrong word given that the anniversary was spent picking through the pieces of the Walsall wreckage.

And it has hardly been a few days for candles and cake reporting on yet another sacking.

Somebody asked me how many managers I had dealt with/gone through during my stint covering the goings-on at Valley Parade.

Mark Hughes was the 18th permanent appointment that has been and gone in my time, including Stuart McCall one, two and three.

Kevin McDonald, who meets the media later today for the first time in a caretaker capacity ahead of the Swindon game, will be the 11th stop-gap appointment during my press-box tenure, including Wayne Jacobs and Mark Trueman twice.

But those figures could be an estimate, I ran out of fingers and toes long ago trying to keep up!

And let's hope McDonald can buck the trend because the record for stand-in City gaffers over this century is a rotten one.

Colin Cooper is the only temporary appointment of the 10 since 2000 to claim the honour of winning their first game in charge. He oversaw a 4-2 victory against Barnet in August 2011, just days before Phil Parkinson was unveiled.

Here's the "roll of honour" in full:

STUART McCALL: 0-1 v Everton, November 2000

Captain Stuart McCall locked horns with his old Rangers boss Walter Smith after Chris Hutchings had been sacked.

But City were beaten by a smash-and-grab raid as Gary Naysmith scored the only goal with four minutes left.

STEVE SMITH: 1-2 v Sheffield United, December 2001

Geoffrey Richmond fired Jim Jefferies on Christmas Eve to leave youth-team coach Steve Smith thrust into the Boxing Day spotlight.

Smith had previously chalked up two wins filling in before Lennie Lawrence came in. But there would be no repeat against Neil Warnock's Blades.

WAYNE JACOBS: 0-1 v Stoke, November 2003

Dean Windass was dropped and sat among the away fans as Wayne Jacobs and Peter Atherton picked a side for the Britannia Stadium.

But the Bantams hardly laid a glove on the home side in a loss before Bryan Robson's appointment.

DAVID WETHERALL: 0-1 v Crewe, February 2007

With Colin Todd's two-and-a-half year stay over, centre half David Wetherall was handed the temporary reins for a relegation dogfight.

Wetherall left himself out the team as City were sunk by Ryan Lowe's last-minute goal.

WAYNE JACOBS: 0-0 v Grimsby, February 2010

Grimsby had gone 20 games without a win when they arrived at Valley Parade for the first game post-Stuart McCall.

But Wayne Jacobs, in his second caretaker stint, could not coax three points from the Bantams against an opponent heading out of the league at the end of the season.

COLIN COOPER: 4-2 v Barnet, August 2011

Peter Jackson's unexpected departure on the eve of the game meant assistant Colin Cooper took charge - and delivered City's first win following an awful start to the season.

James Hanson scored twice and a young Bermudian called Nahki Wells got his first goal for the club.

GREG ABBOTT: 2-2 v Bury, February 2018

One of the most difficult days for a caretaker as Greg Abbott and Kenny Black reluctantly stepped up in the wake of Stuart McCall's second departure.

At least victory looked on when Shay McCartan put City 2-1 ahead with a minute to go - only for George Miller to snatch an instant equaliser.

MARTIN DRURY: 1-5 v Portsmouth, March 2019

"We are not getting relegated" was the bold claim from Martin Drury when he filled the void left by David Hopkin's sudden resignation.

But Drury was powerless to stop City getting thumped 5-1 at Portsmouth as they slipped closer to the drop to League Two.

MARK TRUEMAN: 1-1 v Crawley, December 2020

New chief executive Ryan Sparks summoned Mark Trueman and Conor Sellars from the academy after the axe fell on Stuart McCall's third reign.

They had two days' notice before the midweek haul to Crawley but came back with a 1-1 draw as the duo began to stop the rot.

MARK TRUEMAN: 0-2 v Oldham, February 2022

The sacking of Derek Adams meant Trueman taking the reins once more - nine months after he had lost the full-time post.

But the Boundary Park graveyard for City managers claimed another victim on a miserable, snowy afternoon.
