Arsenal could reportedly sign Brentford star Ivan Toney for a 'lower' fee this summer, as per the transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.
It has widely been suggested that the Gunners are set to prioritise strengthening their frontline by signing a new striker during the off-season. Numerous names have emerged as serious targets for Mikel Arteta's side with Victor Osimhen, Joshua Zirkzee and Viktor Gyokeres being among them, but Toney is reportedly one of their primary options.
Now, writing on the Daily Briefing, Romano has reported that Arsenal are interested in signing the Brentford star and they could make a concrete approach to acquire his service in the upcoming window.
The journalist further claims that Brentford were asking huge money - which was around PS100m - to sell their star man in January, but considering he is set to enter the final year of his current contract, the Bees could accept a 'lower' fee this summer.
It has recently been reported that Brentford could be open to cashing-in on him for a fee of around PS30-40m but Romano has denied that and said Thomas Frank's side are set to demand more than that figure and the final price will be dependent on how many clubs eventually queue up to acquire his service.
Toney to Arsenal Romano wrote:
"Another striker we know has been on Arsenal's radar is Ivan Toney, and there's been fresh speculation again about the Brentford star, who could be one to watch this summer as he approaches the final year of his contract.
"There was interest in Toney in January but at that time Brentford were insisting only on crazy proposals to let him go, and so a deal didn't materialise. For the summer it could be different, and his price tag could be lower, but my understanding is it would not be quite as low as the PS30-40m some reports have stated.
"I don't like to deny what my other colleagues are claiming as anyone has their sources and information. Still, my information is not the same, in this moment I'm told Brentford want more than this reported fee. My understanding is also that there are still no talks taking place with any club, so for sure the number of clubs involved in the race will be key to understand the final price."
Toney is a highly talented striker and has already showcased his qualities in the Premier League in recent years so he could be a shrewd signing for Arsenal to reinforce their frontline.
However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually opt to make a concrete approach to acquire his service in the upcoming transfer window.
