Brentford manager Thomas Frank claimed his side had the best chance of the game at Goodison Park but praised Everton for the way they snub out the threat of an opponent.

The west London club arrived on Merseyside unbeaten in their last five matches and having thrashed Luton Town 5-1 at Kenilworth Road in their previous fixture. But Idrissa Gueye's goal ensured the Blues leapfrogged Brentford into 15th place in the table as they secured the win needed to guarantee their Premier League status.

Frank said: "It was a very even game. It was two teams cancelling each other out more or less throughout the game - it was quite boring actually I think.

"It was a game where one of the teams had to take that one moment. We had the big chance for Ivan (Toney), it was probably the biggest chance of the game at 0-0 at the beginning of the second half.

"We knew they are very good on set-pieces and we were completely on top of that and basically gave nothing away until the goal. It was the second phase and like a flipper game and unfortunately it dropped to them.

"It was a game where we played an average game I would say, definitely not top quality on the ball and credit to Everton, they are very difficult to play against, and credit to the way Sean (Dyche) set his team up. We knew it would be difficult and when we faced that we'd need to be better, it's as simple as that.

"It's irritating because it's a 0-0 game and let's get a draw to keep this unbeaten run."

Asked what he learned from the encounter, the Dane said: "I definitely need to watch it back to be surer. Off the top of my mind I think we didn't do things well enough or quick enough but that said I think Everton are very, very good to neutralise an opponent and make it difficult for them so I think it was a bad match."

Towards the end of the game, Brentford pair Mathias Jensen and Bryan Mbeumo were spotted arguing with each other with their team-mate Toney rushing over to act as peacemaker. When the incident was mentioned to him, Frank said: "I have two opportunities here. I can see I didn't see it and that will be the easy one or I can say I saw it, I haven't spoken to them, I don't know what it's about, it's two players who badly want to win a football match."
