Former West Brom, Brentford and Walsall star set to become free agent at 32

Former West Brom midfielder Romaine Sawyers is expected to leave Cardiff City on a free transfer this summer, according to a report.

The Welsh side didn't publish their retained list on Saturday, but will have shared it to the EFL by the deadline last Saturday. Cardiff have some managerial uncertainty with the club still in contract talks with Erol Bulut over extending his 12-month contract which expires this summer.

Despite not knowing who their manager might be, Cardiff expected to part ways with Romaine Sawyers according to WalesOnline. He and former Liverpool man Sheyi Ojo have found themselves out out of favour in South Wales, and will move on this summer.

The 32-year-old has been limited to just six appearances this season with only two of those coming in the Championship. Sawyers last played for the club in a 4-0 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday in the third round of the FA Cup in January. He has still been called up to play for Saint Kitts and Nevis despite his lack of first-team action and was an unused substitute for Cardiff in their final five matches.

The writing was on the wall for Sawyers, who was told he was 'too good' to be sitting on the bench for Cardiff in August by their manager. He was made available for transfer but a move failed to materialise and then no move happened when the window re-opened in January.

The Birmingham-born midfielder played 64 times for West Brom after joining from Brentford for a reported PS2.9 million in 2019. He got one assist and one goal and was loaned out to Stoke City in the final year of his contract.
