The Brentford ace is eager to secure his spot in the England team for the upcoming tournament in Germany, which would mark his debut in a major international competition.

At 28, Toney is acutely aware that time is not on his side to convince England manager Gareth Southgate of his worthiness for a place on the squad's flight to Germany.

Despite being an unused substitute during England's convincing 3-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina at St James' Park on Monday night, Toney watched from the sidelines as Ollie Watkins was preferred to spearhead the attack. Later, Harry Kane was chosen over Toney to take over from the Aston Villa striker.

Southgate is focused on ensuring his captain is in peak condition for their first group-stage match against Serbia in Gelsenkirchen on June 16, potentially limiting Toney's chances to prove he should be Kane's understudy during the Euros.

Acknowledging the critical juncture for Toney, Southgate has confirmed: "He [Toney] will be involved in the game on Friday."

Missing the Euros would be a devastating setback for Toney. After serving an eight-month betting suspension that ended in January, he has been determined to secure a spot in Southgate's team.

However, he only managed to net four goals in 17 appearances and didn't score in his last 12 Premier League matches of the season.

If Toney doesn't make the cut this summer, he will be 30 by the time the 2026 World Cup rolls around, and he is aware that this may be his only opportunity to represent England on the world's biggest stage.

Southgate is set to submit his final 26-man squad to UEFA on Friday.
