Stuart Armstrong could earn a move to Brentford as Thomas Frank explained taking the Scotland midfielder on trial.

The 32-year-old is a free agent after leaving Southampton and is on the lookout for a new club, potentially his last chance at a big contract. He turned down the chance to stay with Saints after helping them return to the Premier League with promotion through the Championship playoffs.

But he could be set to seal a return to the top flight regardless. Bizarrely, Brentford used their official X account (formerly Twitter) to reveal that the midfielder was part of their squad for the friendly against AFC Wimbledon on Saturday and he featured in the second half for them. They wrote: "Trialist Stuart Armstrong has travelled with today's squad and will be involved in the second-half XI."

Former Dundee United midfielder Armstrong signed from Southampton from Celtic in 2018 and spent five seasons in the Premier League before their relegation to the Championship. Fellow Scotland and ex-Saints star Che Adams is on the move to Torino after also letting his contract run down.
