'We know that' - Joe Gomez makes prediction for Liverpool vs Brentford

Liverpool defender Joe Gomez believes that Brentford will be one of the most challenging opponents Liverpool will play this season when they visit Anfield on Sunday.

The West London club were promoted to the top-flight ahead of the 2021/22 campaign, building a strong reputation against the league's so-called 'big six'. Liverpool have been made suffer by Thomas Frank's tactics, particularly away from home, while in this fixture back in May it took a penalty to sink the Bees.

Due to injuries impacting the defence, Gomez is line to start, and told Premier League Productions his honest thoughts of the ninth-placed side.

He said: "They have proven now they are a very good Premier League side. They have good individuals that speak for themselves, but as a unit I think they've created a real culture there that other clubs look at and pick things from.

"It won't be easy, for sure, we know that. But any game in the Premier League isn't easy and we've just got to try to prepare well and do the best we can."

It would be the 26-year-old's second consecutive start as Jurgen Klopp looks to make the most of his defensive options. Last week he played as a left-back - the first time he has done so for Liverpool since 2015, the year he signed for the club.

Gomez was substituted against Luton Town with the score 0-0, and later his team-mates were forced to rescue a 1-1 draw against the newly-promoted team. He explained how the mindset to take that disappointment in the squad's stride was of most importance.

"That's all we can do [move on from the Luton result], that's what we have to do," Gomez continued. "Obviously we had the Europa League in between and that sort of resets us in a way, but that's what the gaffer emphasises and that's where he leads by example - by dropping it so quickly.

"Reviewing it straight after the game, a quick meeting in the following days and then we're onto the next. That's probably the biggest thing in the game, if teams are able to do that and move on from a negative performance it will stand them in good stead."

Sportingly, the Reds' defender was highly complimentary of the Hatters' players for the effort they showed to ensure he and Liverpool left without the full prize on offer, and to team-mate Luis Diaz for the fight he displayed amid his family's ordeal.

"Credit to Luton, they obviously knew the challenge, they knew how to approach it and made it difficult for us, really difficult," said the No.2.

"They stuck to it for the whole game, but it's down to us to find the chances. What the gaffer emphasised, we've got to approach it the right way from the start of the game.

"We didn't manage to break them down, but obviously it was special what Lucho did. He came on in the phase of things off the pitch, it speaks volumes for who he is and his character.

"It was a tough game and I think many a team will go there this season and find it difficult."
