Arsenal star on brink of obscure Premier League record to justify Mikel Arteta decision

Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya is enjoying a fine run of form between the sticks for the Gunners and another clean sheet away at Brighton will see him make Premier League history

David Raya could make Premier League history during Arsenal's tricky trip to Brighton on Saturday night.

The Gunners goalkeeper has recovered from a shaky start to his time in north London and has since played his way into the hearts of the Emirates faithful. On loan from Brentford, it is widely expected that Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta will look to make Raya's move a permanent one in the summer.

The decision to sign the Spain international was a controversial one from Arteta and not a call that was widely backed by the Arsenal fanbase. Aaron Ramsdale is a popular figure at the club, but lost his place as first-choice shot-stopper to Raya.

31 games into his Gunners career, Raya is already on the verge of history. The 28-year-old has played an integral part of Arsenal's fine form on the road as of late, keeping clean sheets away at West Ham, Burnley, Sheffield United and Manchester City.

Up next for Arteta's side is a visit to the Amex to meet Roberto De Zerbi's Brighton outfit. If Raya were to prevent the Seagulls from scoring, he would become the first Spanish goalkeeper in Premier League history to keep five successive clean sheets away from home.

Raya has looked incredibly confident and commanding in recent weeks. Despite a difficult start, the Spaniard has always backed himself to justify Arteta's controversial decision to give him the nod as No. 1 over Ramsdale.

"I spoke to the boss and he sent me the values of what Arsenal are about. The way that the club is going, it's growing even more so it is a beautiful challenge to take and I couldn't say no.

"One of the challenges is to get used to the style and the patterns, and get to know the players as soon as possible to get that bond from the beginning. Knowing the players and the staff, I think they're going to put me in the right direction and I'll fit in straight away."
