Gareth Southgate considering Euro 2024 call-up for unheralded Championship star

Gareth Southgate's goalkeeping options have been hit hard over the season, with a string of candidates either dropped or suffering injury.

Jordan Pickford remains first choice for the Three Lions and he has started all 31 of Everton's Premier League games so far this season so his place is safe.

However, Aaron Ramsdale has lost his place at Arsenal to David Raya, Newcastle's Nick Pope has been sidelined since December and Crystal Palace's Sam Johnstone is out injured for the rest of the season.

Burnley stopper James Trafford is in contention but his form has not been great and has been replaced by Arijanet Muric recently.

This could all work in the favour of Rushworth, with The Mirror reporting that the 22-year-old could get an unlikely call-up for the huge tournament this summer.

The Yorkshireman is on loan at Swansea from Brighton and has had an excellent season for the Welsh side in the Championship.

It would be a huge step-up for Rushworth and, although it is one Southgate is reportedly considering, may not be one he actually goes through with, depending on the recovery of his other goalkeepers.

Pope is expected to return to action for Newcastle before the end of the season and that could be enough to earn himself a place at Euro 2024, although Johnstone's elbow injury may keep him out entirely.

Other options for Southgate include Crystal Palace's Dean Henderson and Rangers' Jack Butland.
