‘Excellent’ ace surprises, another disappoints: Five Wolves stars who sent O’Neil a clear message v Brighton - opinion
Source:Molineux News

Wolves crashed out of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night after suffering defeat to Brighton.

Playing well and being unable to win football matches has become a theme for Wolves this season, with the Old Gold winning one of their six games in all competitions.

Gary O'Neil's side dropped out of the Carabao Cup in the third round most recently, losing 3-2 to Brighton at the Amex.

While Brighton simply got the better of the visitors in the first half, Wolves certainly grew into proceedings after the interval however, it wasn't enough.

Like the opening four games in the Premier League, Wolves had a lot of positives to take from the defeat, with several players giving O'Neil something to think about after the loss.

The Portuguese winger had a positive impact, being a dangerous outlet for the Old Gold and adding a fresh dimension going forward against the Seagulls.

While the summer arrival missed a brilliant chance to score, it was a strong outing for Gomes, who has surely given O'Neil something to consider in terms of squad selection against Aston Villa.

MORE WOLVES STORIES

Hwang Hee-chan The same cannot be said about Hwang Hee-chan, who was arguably the worst performer on the pitch for Wolves against Brighton.

It's difficult to digest that the 28-year-old is the same player who netted 12 Premier League goals last season, as the Korean was a shadow of himself at the Amex.

Recording only 21 touches on the ball in 71 minutes, it was an evening to forget for the forward, who surely has little claim to game time in the near future.

Santi Bueno O'Neil's woes regarding Santi Bueno continued against Brighton, as the centre-back was not terrible, yet provided nothing near special.

The 25-year-old is yet to consistently impress at Molineux, a theme that continued against the Seagulls as questions over his suitability to the English game were raised.

Brighton's decisive third goal links back to the Uruguayan's half-hearted approach, with the centre-back simply not being strong enough in defence for the Old Gold, with his performance set to prolong his wait for game time.

Goncalo Guedes In a positive light, Goncalo Guedes would have given O'Neil a selection headache with eyes on Aston Villa, as the striker was in hot form again in the cup.

Guedes was called 'excellent' by O'Neil, as he finished emphatically to net Wolves' first of the night, with his goal simply crediting his strong all-round display.

After his performance, it will be expected that the striker will be handed a considerable role at Villa Park, with his clinical nature in the final third able to make a difference.

Tommy Doyle On the subject of giving O'Neil a headache comes Tommy Doyle, whose quality is difficult to ignore but equally, difficult to reward.

The 22-year-old captained Wolves on the night at the Amex, capping the occasion off with a goal and a performance that saw him heavily involved in the middle of the park.

O'Neil has a problem to solve regarding the Englishman and how he can fit into the favoured XI, with Wolves spoiled for choice in midfield at present.
