After losing the creative talents of Crysencio Summerville and Georginio Rutter in the summer transfer window, there were big concerns over the impact that would have on Leeds United's attack. Summerville and Rutter terrorised Championship defences last season, contributing 50 goal involvements between them as the Whites made it through to the play-off final.
Would the Whites be able to cope without them? Who would be their talisman?
Step forward Wilfried Gnonto. The diminutive winger has made a strong start to the 2024/25 campaign, bagging two goals and four assists in nine league outings.
His stellar form has continued in the international arena this week. Gnonto wore the captain's armband as Italy's Under-21s drew 1-1 with the Republic of Ireland in Trieste last night, setting up Chelsea midfielder Cesare Casadei for the opening goal. However, Gnonto did fluff his lines from 12 yards, blazing a penalty over the crossbar after Anselmo Garcia McNulty brought down Tommaso Baldanzi.
Ireland captain Andrew Moran netted after the break to earn the visitors a share of the spoils. The result ensured Italy finished top of Group A after six wins and four draws as they secured their place in next year's European Championships in Slovakia.
Helping the Italians reach the tournament will have done Gnonto's chances of earning a recall to the Italian senior squad a power of good. National team boss Luciano Spalletti was in attendance to watch the U21s in action at the Stadio Nereo Rocco yesterday.
As per TMW, Spalletti said: "There are guys who can be part of our group, several good ones here. Baldanzi is the most ready, Gnonto has already been there, we work in close proximity. They tell us everything."
Gnonto was taken off in the 79th minute and is expected to return to Thorp Arch today as the Whites step up their preparations for Friday's mouth-watering clash with Sheffield United.
