Brighton & Hove Albion Football Club. Yasin Ayari: A deep dive into Brighton's young Swede
Source:VAVEL |

Yasin Ayari completed a move to Brighton from AIK on Monday, 30 January 2023, for PS4 million.

Not many Albion fans had heard of the then 19-year-old, but there was much excitement as most players thrive upon their arrival at the club.

Ayari made his Premier League debut in a 2-0 victory away to Bournemouth in April 2023 and received his first league start away to Aston Villa on the final day of the 2022/23 season.

So far this season, the Swede has proved to be a surprise package for many, but what does he have to offer for the remainder of the season? And where does he fit in? VAVEL explores all here.

His club career so far Ayari started his career in AIK's youth set-up in 2019 and steadily rose through the club, playing for their U17 and U19 sides.

With a market value of approximately PS290k, manager Bartosz Grzelak offered Ayari his first professional contract which he signed on October 22, 2021.

Ayari played 47 games for AIK - 2,404 minutes in total - in which he scored five goals and provided two assists. His first goal for the club came in a 4-2 defeat to Hacken in 2022.

After impressing in the Allsvenskan and Europa Conference League qualifiers, Brighton decided to take a chance and bring Ayari to the club 48 hours before the January 2023 deadline.

Similarly to most young players to sign for Brighton, Ayari was not rushed into playing and was given a lot of time to settle and adapt.

Across the second half of the season, he only made four appearances - three in the league and one in the FA Cup - in which he only played a total of 77 minutes.

The next stage of development was to find a good loan move where he could learn and get a lot of minutes under his belt.

So, in the 2023 summer transfer window, the Seagulls made the decision to loan him to Coventry City in the Championship.

Over the first half of that season, he played 13 games of which he only started six. The loan had not been going to plan, so he was recalled in January 2024 and sent on loan to Blackburn Rovers.

Frustratingly for Brighton, a similar situation occurred at Blackburn. He made 13 appearances and only played 423 minutes, which is less than he received at Coventry.

Following a disappointing year of loan spells, most fans expected him to be sent back out on loan again.

But Ayari was handed a boost when new manager Fabian Hurzeler was impressed with what he saw in training and pre-season.

He was included in the club's plans for this season, and has already made seven appearances and played 307 minutes.

So far this season, his performances have been extremely impressive.

His international career so far Ayari has been involved at multiple age levels of the Sweden national team, from U16s up to the senior side.

He made his U16 debut on May 12, 2019. He played 65 minutes in a 3-0 defeat to Belgium U16.

Two days later, he played 19 minutes in a 1-1 draw with Portugal U16. These were his only caps for the U16s

A couple of years later, he was given an U19 call-up and played 10 games for the side, scoring one goal and providing two assists.

Ayari made his U19 debut on September 4, 2021, at the age of 17 years, 10 years and 29 days.

14 months later, he was called up to Sweden U21 where he made his debut on November 17, 2022, at the age of 19 years, one month and 11 days.

He played 771 minutes - 11 games - in which he scored two goals and assisted four goals.

Two months later, Ayari was handed his Sweden senior debut at the age of only 19 years, three months and three days.

He has already played six games for the senior side and scored his first goal in a 2-2 draw with Slovakia a few days ago.

It was a fantastic acrobatic finish.

What does he bring to Brighton? Ayari is the type of player that every club and every manager loves to have in their team. In short, he is a workhorse.

The 21-year-old is extremely versatile, being able to play anywhere in the midfield and wide right.

He is a hard worker but also has a good eye for a pass and great technical ability on the ball.

For a player that is 5ft 6in, he is also surprisingly strong and able to protect and win the ball against any midfielder.

He has almost a similar profile to former Manchester United midfielder, Angel Gomes.

Ayari was brought in as a prospect who is very raw and needs a lot of moulding and development, so fans should expect mistakes as they should with any young player.

His football intelligence on and off the ball and his willingness to attack and defend makes Ayari a perfect fit for Hurzeler and his system.

Precise passing, timed runs into the box, and most importantly heart and desire; the young Swede has all of those.

Given time and minutes, there is a good chance he can break into the starting XI at some point this season.

Where does he fit into the squad? Brighton currently have a lot of talented and experienced midfielders in their squad - Mats Wieffer, Carlos Baleba, Matt O'Riley, Jack Hinshelwood, and James Milner - so it will take a lot of hard work and graft for Ayari to force his way through.

But the fact he has been kept amongst that group will seriously help him develop and give him the best possible tools to fight for his place in the team.

The Swede has played in every position in the midfield, making a few appearances at left midfield and right midfield. During his 10 games out wide - nine of which were on the right - he scored one goal.

The current system does not include wide midfielders, though, so it seems unlikely he will play in these two positions anytime soon.

Centrally, he has made four appearances as a defensive midfielder in which he provided one assist.

With the form of Baleba and the return of Wieffer, it would be a big surprise to see him used deep in the midfield.

He has also made nine appearances as an attacking midfielder, scoring one goal.

The Seagulls have not really been playing a traditional attacking midfielder this season. Instead, they have been using Georginio Rutter and Joao Pedro as false nines that can drop deep into the attacking midfield position when required. This makes it unlikely Ayari will be played here.

Ayari's main position - and the one we will most likely see him in - is central midfield. He has played 20 games there, scoring four goals and providing three assists.

We have already seen him used there this season so that is probably going to continue. But the return of O'Riley could impact Ayari's minutes, as many believe this is where the former Celtic midfielder was brought in to play.

For this season, Ayari needs to get his head down and work hard to show what he can do when he gets his chances. If he does that, then there is a real chance to break into the starting XI.

From what we have seen already, there is no doubt that Ayari will do just that.
