Newcastle United are interested in signing Leeds United starlet Finlay Gorman, but Manchester City are the front-runners according to Yorkshire Evening Post.

Writing on their official website (17 October), the local news outlet report that Manchester City have already made contact to sign the 15-year-old starlet but the Magpies are also looking to sign the winger.

But the 2022/23 treble winners currently believe they are leading the way to bring him into their club, with a six-figure compensation fee expected if he is to leave Elland Road.

"Newcastle United are also among those hopeful of luring the teenager away from Thorp Arch, as the north east club continue their youth-focused recruitment drive," they wrote.

"However, Man City consider themselves front-runners in their pursuit of the teen."

Battle on

It looks certain that there is going to be even more interest from the super-rich clubs over the coming weeks and months to sign young Gorman and Leeds are going to have a very tough time when it comes to keeping hold of him.

Gorman is an incredibly gifted young player, making his Under-18's debut as a 14 year old and even featuring for the England Under-16's at the same age.

But he has now become a super target for the biggest clubs in the country and that will automatically put more eyes on him from other clubs.

He'd no doubt earn more money there and obviously have the benefit of working with top coaches too, but whether his development would stagnate with less regular game time would remain to be seen.

Both Newcastle and Man City have made it their mission to get the best young British talent if they can and Gorman is certainly that, but Leeds have the example of Archie Young to show he can get opportunities if he stays.

It will be interesting to see, but the interest is starting to ramp up and Leeds have to prepare for the worst.
