Unai Emery was left "deeply unhappy" with John McGinn after a misplaced pass with Aston Villa throwing away a 2-0 lead to draw 2-2 with Chelsea, according to Jacob Tanswell.

The Athletic journalist explained via X during the game that Emery was shouting at McGinn for the incident but calmed down once the captain apologised.

It was a frustrating draw for Villa after going two goals ahead with McGinn contributing to the first goal as his effort deflected in off of Marc Cucurella for an own-goal before goals from Morgan Rogers, Conor Gallagher and Noni Madueke.

John McGinn leaves Unai Emery unhappy after Aston Villa v Chelsea McGinn started the game as the more advanced of three midfielders before dropping deeper with the introduction of Moussa Diaby following Youri Tielemans' injury, but he failed to adapt his game to the deeper role.

While he was far from the worst player at Villa Park in the 2-2 draw, it is clear to understand the boss' frustration as the midfielder completed just a 71 per cent pass accuracy, dropping to 50 per cent from long passes. [Sofascore]

On top of the disappointing passing, McGinn also recorded a zero per cent success rate with his attempted crosses and failed to hit the target with his shots while losing possession eight times.

Defensively, he also failed to stamp his mark. With a 0 per cent success rate on aerial duels and having been dribbled past twice, his presence in the centre of midfield did little to stop Chelsea's pressure as the Blues dominated 71 per cent of the possession.

McGinn has been a reliable presence for Villa this season, playing in various roles whenever he is needed to cover for injuries, but his sloppy and wasteful display against Chelsea was a point of frustration for the boss and something he will need to work on.

Depending on the length of time Tielemans misses after his injury, McGinn may be asked to play the deeper role again, and cannot afford to be so sloppy in possession.
