Aston Villa are confident of completing Ian Maatsen's arrival from Chelsea within the next 48 hours after agreeing a PS37.5 million deal with the Blues, claims Matt Law.
Though the 22-year-old is away on international duty with the Netherlands, the clubs have been discussing his switch to Villa Park after Borussia Dortmund refused to take up the buyout option.
Maatsen joined Die Borussen on a six-month loan last January and helped the Bundesliga outfit reach the Champions League final, only for Real Madrid to beat them 2-0 at Wembley Stadium.
In doing so, the left-back made the Champions League Team of the Season for 2023/24 and became one of the hottest young prospects in Europe.
However, the Germans were reluctant to meet his PS35m release clause, opening the door to Villa to swoop in and take him to Birmingham for a slightly higher transfer fee.
The deal is a win-win for all parties involved.
Unai Emery would address the left-back issue after Lucas Digne blew hot and cold last term, while Chelsea receive a handsome figure for a homegrown starlet they were keen to offload anyway.
Despite his epic error in the Champions League final, Maatsen's stint at Dortmund was an utter success as he tallied two goals and two assists across 16 Bundesliga outings from left-back.
He's currently at Euro 2024 with the Netherlands, but Villa remain confident of striking an agreement with the youngster remotely.
Maatsen's impending arrival should soften the blow of Douglas Luiz's imminent departure to Juventus, with the Italians reportedly on the verge of completing a complex cash-plus-player deal to sign the Brazilian.
Weston McKennie was supposed to be one of the two counterparts in this multifaceted operation, but the USMNT midfielder bailed on the Lions, throwing the deal into doubt.
Negotiations are back on track after Juventus proposed highly-rated 23-year-old Enzo Barrenechea as McKennie's replacement.
