Jurgen Klopp has already had his say on Trent Alexander-Arnold’s ‘replacement’ for England
Source:Liverpool Echo:

Trent Alexander-Arnold's stint in England's midfield may be coming to an end, and Jurgen Klopp has already weighed in on his potential replacement.

Having struggled to make a significant impact in England's opening Euro 2024 matches, Conor Gallagher is reportedly set to start against Slovenia in place of the Liverpool star. With Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice seemingly cemented in Gareth Southgate's team, Alexander-Arnold is the member of England's midfield make-up who has faced the most scrutiny.

Gallagher, 24, replaced the Liverpool full-back during the games against Serbia and Denmark earlier in the competition. That suggests Southgate is ready to trust the Chelsea midfielder with reports claiming that Alexander-Arnold will be dropped from the starting XI and replaced by Gallagher for Tuesday's clash.

And ex-Liverpool manager Klopp once commented on Gallagher's abilities when assessing the player ahead of a Premier League fixture, per The Mirror. It was while Gallagher was on loan at Crystal Palace during the 2021/22 season that the German expressed admiration for a key member of the opposition.

Speaking to journalists at the time, Klopp said: "So that's incredible quality and now in midfield, [Cheikhou] Kouyate back in his position, [Conor] Gallagher I'm not sure you can still say he's a talent when he plays for [England] U21s, but he's a really, really good player."

Those comments suggest he saw Gallagher as already being a Premier League-quality asset when he was loaned out from Stamford Bridge. Fast forward to now, and Gallagher has been a regular in Chelsea's midfield under various managers for the past two seasons.

Gallagher made his senior England debut in 2021 and has since earned 15 caps, although only six of these have been starts. Moreover, just two of those outings were in competitive matches, so his experience in high-pressure England situations - like Tuesday's game in Cologne - is limited.

While Alexander-Arnold may boast a technical edge over his Chelsea counterpart, a more defensive player like Gallagher could help get the most out of players like Bellingham and Foden further up the pitch. A draw against Slovenia might be enough for England to top Group C, but Southgate is racing against time to improve his squad ahead of tougher challenges in Germany.
