Premier League sides Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur look set to miss out on Peterborough United defender Ronnie Edwards to Championship promotion winners Southampton.
The 21-year-old picked up the EFL's Young Player of the Year award at the governing body's annual ceremony after another impressive campaign for the League One play-off semi-finalists.
Edwards appeared 45 times, scoring two goals as Darren Ferguson's side finished fourth in the third tier.
Overall he has made 142 appearances across all competitions for Posh, including 34 in the Championship which has attracted a host of suitors.
The England youth international has been linked to several clubs, but now according to Pete O'Rourke former interested parties are set to miss out to the Saints as they 'open talks' with the youngster.
What has Darragh MacAnthony said regarding the news? The Posh chairman is often open and honest regarding transfers where possible. He often discusses on his podcast The Hard Truth and on his personal Twitter account the inner workings of the club. A fan asked for a response on 25th May 2024 to a report by Alex Crook from talkSPORT.
MacAnthony responded:
"Ignore the noise, price quotes, clubs named. It's transfer season so this stuff is non stop. We won't be talking club names re transfers.
"It unsettles players, makes clubs we try to acquire players from think we have Brewsters Billions to spend (we don't). None of it is helpful lol."

What does this mean for Edwards' future? Darragh is spot on with regards to the current period we are in. Clubs up and down the leagues will be looking for players to recruit and considering long lists of potential targets.
It is easy for a player that is perhaps 6th or 7th on a list of potential names suddenly have stories appear about them due to a phone call from the club about his availability.
Edwards may well have interest from Chelsea and Tottenham alongside Southampton, but there are also a lot of parties that would benefit from that news being out there.
