Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall fits into Chelsea’s ‘Swiss Army knife’ plan under Enzo Maresca

Dewsbury-Hall has signed a five-year contract with the option of an extra 12 months and said: "It is amazing to be sitting here as a Chelsea player. This is a club people grow up watching and hoping to one day play for, so it is a privilege to be here. I'm really excited to get going and can't wait to show everybody what I can do."

Chelsea are planning to build a squad that is ready to cope with playing 75 to 80 games next season, as the club take part in the Europa Conference League and also plan to take next summer's Club World Cup in America seriously.

That means Maresca needs at least two top players for each position and needs 'Swiss Army Knife' players who can play in different roles and systems.

The Italian's philosophy revolves around total ball domination, with inverted full-backs, overloads and draining the opposition physically and mentally. If an opponent defends with four, Maresca's team attacks with five.

Normally, Maresca likes to defend with five: three central defenders, an inverted full-back and a deep midfielder, either Moises Caicedo or Romeo Lavia at Chelsea. His team can then attack through Dewsbury-Hall, Enzo Fernandez, Cole Palmer, Nkunku and Jackson.

Maresca would also have the option of rotating in wingers Raheem Sterling, Noni Madueke and Mykhailo Mudryk for one or more of his four attacking players behind Jackson, or another striker. Chelsea are still looking to sign a right-footed winger.

It is anticipated that Robert Sanchez will start as Maresca's first-choice goalkeeper and he will be expected to perform a similar role to that of Ederson at City and the one Mads Hermansen mastered at Leicester last season. Conor Coady remarked that the Dane is so comfortable with the ball that he could play in the centre of midfield

Chelsea will continue to work on sales, with youngster Michael Golding moving to Leicester. Defender Trevoh Chalobah is expected to leave Stamford Bridge, with the futures of Conor Gallagher and Ben Chilwell uncertain under Maresca.

Tottenham Hotspur remain interested in Gallagher, despite signing midfielder Archie Gray from Leeds United, along with Aston Villa. But sources claim the England international may be reluctant to move to the Midlands.
