The final eight of Euro 2024 are set, with Netherlands and Turkey moving on from the last two Round of 16 matches on Tuesday.

The former did so effectively, efficiently, convincingly, dispatching upstart Romania with three goals to the good. Cody Gakpo opened the scoring halfway through the first half, and while the scoreline remained close until the last ten minutes, the lead never really looked in danger. Virgil van Dijk saw an effort come off the woodwork in the second half, before a late Donyell Malen double sealed the deal for the Dutch.

And they will take on Turkey in the quarterfinals, who played out yet another remarkable game at this tournament, beating Austria, 2-1.

But if there ever was a scoreline to belie the drama on offer, it was this one. Austria missed a hatful of excellent chances, including one in the dying seconds that needed perhaps the save of the tournament from Turkey goalkeeper Mert Gunok. Meanwhile, at the other end, Merih Demiral pulled off a fantastic tribute to Liliam Thuram at the 1998 World Cup, scoring both of Turkey's goals off of set pieces. Demiral has not scored more than two goals in any of his eight senior professional seasons and had two goals total in his previous 47 national team appearances.
