A look at some of the latest headline-grabbing Premier League transfer rumours this week.
While Euro 2024 takes a brief rest before the quarter-finals kick off, the Premier League transfer window has been working overtime. The tournament has proven to be a great opportunity for clubs to watch their transfer targets play for their countries but of course, other players are also being scouted away from Euro 2024.
As the new Premier League season fast approaches, let's take a look at some of the latest transfer rumours making headlines.
Newcastle name Anthony Gordon asking priceOne of the biggest stories doing the rounds this week has been Liverpool's link with Anthony Gordon. The winger has 'had his head turned' by the prospect of signing for his boyhood club but according to The Telegraph, he has been 'denied his dream move' after the Reds failed to match Newcastle United's asking price.
That doesn't seem to be the end of the road for this link though, as the Magpies have now informed Liverpool what they are looking for if a deal for Gordon is going to happen. As reported by Football Insider, Newcastle have told their rivals they want a 'total package of PS100 million' to part ways with the 23-year-old. Liverpool have a 'concrete interest' in Gordon but they will need to fork out a large chunk of cash if they want to get a deal over the line.
The 3AM Verdict: Liverpool and Gordon both want this move to happen and he could be a valuable asset to the team, especially if Luis Diaz leaves this summer. However, PS100 million is an eye-watering sum and the report claims that Newcastle are looking to make as much profit on Gordon as possible, having signed him for PS45 million from Everton.
The England international contributed 12 goals and 11 assists in all competitions last season and while he will more than likely boost his tally surrounded by the creativity at Liverpool, the glaring transfer fee cannot be ignored. Liverpool may stand a chance at a more budget-friendly deal if they wait another year, with Gordon out of contract in 2026 and the Magpies likely to negotiate a cut price if there is risk of him not signing a new deal.
Man United linked with 'sensational return' for ex-playerIn a surprise report by Calciomercato, Manchester United have been linked with their former player Romelu Lukaku, as rivals Chelsea are desperate to move him on. According to the report, the Red Devils are contemplating a 'sensational return' for the Belgian, who has struggled to make an impact for his country at Euro 2024.
United signed Lukaku in 2017 for PS75 million following a memorable run with Everton, which saw him return 71 goals across all competitions during his three seasons at Goodison Park. He got his first season with United off to a flying start, with 27 goals and nine assists on the board in all tournaments. Lukaku then went on to sing for Inter, before returning to Chelsea where he has seriously struggled to re-establish himself. The Blues now do not see him as part of their future plans and United have now shown interest in what has been described as a 'difficult but not impossible deal'.
The 3AM Verdict: United are eager to make some statement signings this summer and they have already made it clear they plan to undergo a pretty hefty restructure, but re-signing Lukaku is not the answer. The 31-year-old is reportedly earning a whopping PS325,000 per week, which is an incredibly high amount to try and match.
While he is still enjoying scoring for fun on the domestic stage, he has fallen heavily out of favour at Chelsea and may be better pursuing a permanent return to Inter, where he has settled. There is also something about re-signing a previous player that could represent something of a backwards step, rather than a leap forward. There are plenty of other options for United to explore, who likely won't cost a mammoth amount in wages either.
