We've seen some impressive goalkeeping performances over at Euro 2024, but tonight it was the Copa America's turn, as defending champions Argentina were taking on upstart Ecuador in the quarterfinals.
Argentina had no problem getting out of the group, with three wins from three without conceding, but Moises Caicedo & Co proved a much tougher nut to crack. A well worked set piece in the first half gave them the lead, but other than that, they were kept quiet. At the other end, Ecuador wasted several great opportunities, including Enner Valencia hitting the post with a penalty that was awarded for a handball, but did finally get the equalizer deep into stoppage time with a set piece of their own.
By then, both Kendry Paez and Enzo Fernandez had been subbed off (both after about 75 minutes of action), with the former especially having a disappointingly quiet game.
The match went straight to penalties - no extra-time until the final - at which point Emiliano Martinez took over, and almost equaled Diogo Costa's three-for-three heroics (for Portugal) from the other night. After Lionel Messi dinked a Panenka off the crossbar and over, "Dibu" saved the first two Ecuador penalties to set his team up for their eventual 4-2 margin of victory in the shootout. They will take on the winners of Venezuela and Canada in the semifinals.
Ecuador head home with their heads held high. A bounce here or there, and they could've been the ones moving on. Caicedo especially had a fantastic tournament after finishing the season in great form for Chelsea, so hopefully he keeps that going into next season as well!
