Spain, France keep marching on at Euro 2024
Source:We Ain't

Spain have made it five wins from five with an extra-time, 2-1 victory over hosts Germany tonight, and have reached the semifinals of Euro 2024, where they will take on ... who beat ... in a penalty shootout. Spain made the semifinals last time as well, but lost to eventual champions Italy.

Marc Cucurella started, as usual, but had a bit of a heart-in-mouth moment when he blocked a goalbound shot with an inadvertent handball. Luckily for him, he was adjudged to be within the bounds of the current incarnation of the ever-changing handball rules.

Dani Olmo, who plies his trade in the Bundesliga with RB Leipzig had a hand in both goals, getting Spain on the board early in second half - Lamine Yamal picking up his tournament-leading third assist! - then setting up an unlikely winner from Mikel Merino in the penultimate minute of extra-time. Florian Wirtz equalized for Germany in the dying moments of regulation. Drama!

The second match of the night took a long, long ... long time to get into gear, and it was certainly not the French side (other than maybe Ousmane Dembele) who were doing the shifting.

But Portugal, when they managed to escape N'Golo Kante's attentions, were unable to beat Mike Maignan in goal, and this time, they would not prevail in the shootout - with Diogo Costa evidently using up all his penalty-saving magic against Romania in the Round of 16. France went a perfect five-for-five while ex-Chelsea loanee Joao Felix pinged one off the post to send Portugal packing.

That's the way the cookie crumbles.

A France player is still yet to score a goal from open play in this tournament - one penalty and two own goals in five games - but here they are in the final four again. Winners winning.
