Chelsea agree £14m Renato Veiga deal as Enzo Maresca's transfer influence clear
Source:Football.London -

Chelsea have agreed a PS14million deal with FC Basel to sign Renato Veiga, football.london understands.

The 20-year-old is set to sign a long-term contract at Stamford Bridge with a medical already scheduled. Veiga is a left-sided central defender that can also operate as a left-back or as a defensive midfielder - with his versatility understood to be a major selling point to Chelsea.

Veiga, who signed for Basel last summer from Sporting, will become Chelsea's sixth signing of what has already been a hectic summer transfer window for the club. Tosin Adarabioyo, Estevao Willian (joins in 2025), Omari Kellyman, Marc Guiu and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall have already walked through the door at Stamford Bridge - and more are set to follow.

Aaron Anselmino from Boca Juniors is close to completing his PS17m move as well, football.london understands. It will very soon become eight incomings in west London - once the Anselmino and Veiga deals are confirmed - taking this summer's spending to well over PS100million.

This will be the second signing this summer where it feels very much Enzo Maresca-influenced. The Italian, who was appointed as head coach last month to replace Mauricio Pochettino, has a very particular style of play where he likes his full-backs to invert while in possession - and Veiga fits that mould completely.

Of course the club have already signed Dewsbury-Hall from Leicester City as well, with the 25-year-old midfielder reuniting with Maresca after they enjoyed success at the King Power Stadium together. It very much feels as if Maresca is having an influence on the transfer strategy at the club already.

The transfer strategy is of course led by the club's two co-sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart. One of the reasons Pochettino was said to have left Stamford Bridge by mutual consent was because he could not get on board with such little say over transfer business - but that does not seem to be the case with Maresca during his early days in SW6.

Veiga is set to be looked at during pre-season as Maresca assesses whether or not the Portugal Under-21s international is ready to compete for a spot in the first-team. There could be a loan on the cards should that not be the case, potentially to Strasbourg with the French outfit part of BlueCo's multi-club system.

Marc Cucurella is another option for the inverted left-back role. The Spain international, who is currently enjoying a fine Euro 2024 campaign with his country after beating Germany on Friday evening to progress to the semi-final of the competition, was used as an inverted full-back in the final days of Pochettino's reign at Stamford Bridge and shone in the process.
