Filip Jorgensen to Chelsea transfer latest: Release clause, Villarreal contract, Netflix documentary and 'future' admission
Source:Latest News

Chelsea have been linked with a move for Villarreal goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen this summer. The Blues already have two goalkeepers, but reports claim they are on the lookout for another, eyeing the La Liga stopper.

Here we round up everything you need to know about Jorgensen's current situation at Villarreal and what has been said about a possible move to Stamford Bridge this summer.

Who is Filip Jorgensen?Filip Jorgensen is a 22-year-old goalkeeper who currently plays for Villarreal. He was born in Sweden but while he has represented his country of birth at youth level, he switched to Denmark to represent the nation's under-21s in 2021 and was eligible to do so through his Danish father.

Jorgensen began his career at GIF Nike in 2007, later bouncing around clubs in Sweden before joining Mallorca in 2016. He was snapped up by Villarreal's youth setup one year later. After representing the Yellow Submarine's between 2020 and 2023, the 22-year-old broke into the Yellows' first team in 2023 and took over the starting role from Pepe Reina last season.

The Danish under-21s international picked up heavy criticism early on with errors behind a shaky defence, with Villarreal sacking two managers during the season. But they settled with the return of Marcelino, and Jorgensen quickly showed his prowess behind a more solid back-line, impressing and gaining a reputation as one of the best up and coming goalkeepers in the league. His rise was later documented as part of Netflix's new La Liga All Access documentary.

Latest rumoursChelsea are interested in a deal for Jorgensen according to numerous reports. The Blues already have Robert Sanchez as their starting keeper, while Dorde Petrovic is the club's back-up, with Marcus Bettinelli moving on from the number three role this summer.

It would be a little surprising if Jorgensen swapped a starting role in the East of Spain for a number two or number three role at Stamford Bridge, but Chelsea are said to like the look of the Danish youth international, and are reportedly considering making a bid.

Release clause and contractJorgensen penned a new deal with Villarreal recently to keep him at the club until 2029. As part of that, his release clause was raised to PS28.6million, but Marca have reported that the Yellow Submarine are looking for a deal worth more than PS16.8million (20 million euros) if they are to sell.

The 22-year-old is a starting goalkeeper for Villarreal, and they would need to replace him if he was to leave.

What has been saidSpeaking earlier in the summer, and before his new contract to 2029 was confirmed, Jorgensen said of his future: "I have a contract until 2027, but people don't know much about it because it hasn't been officially published. My future is in Villarreal. The next step for me is to play in the Champions League. There are many good keepers in Denmark, but I believe I will get my opportunity."

Speaking about his first Denmark senior call-up, he added: "I'm with the Danish national team, and I don't think much beyond that. It was a bit of a surprise (to be called up), but I am concentrating on Denmark. It means a lot and I'm looking to continue moving forward."

On Villarreal and the help Pepe Reina gave him, he continued: "I think it has been a good season. We had a tough start, but we were improving individually and collectively. He (Pepe Reina) helped me a lot and I am happy that he is (was) there."
