'Would like to leave': 'Phenomenal' midfielder wants transfer, he's on Chelsea and Newcastle United radars

Chelsea and Newcastle United may be on red alert as one Bundesliga midfielders aims to secure a transfer before the summer transfer window closes.

The new Premier League season is fast approaching and both Chelsea and Newcastle United will be looking to improve on last season.

Newcastle weren't able to build on a Champions League finish, ending up seventh in the Premier League table.

Chelsea endured another mixed campaign in the Todd Boehly era, struggling for large parts before a late season run secured a top-six finish.

That wasn't enough for Mauricio Pochettino to keep his job though as he departed Chelsea in May - much to the surprise of Paul Merson.

Both sides will be looking to improve and push for a top four finish - and may be in the market for signings to help that happen.

HITC reported back in January that Newcastle had placed Kone on their midfield wish list.

No January deal materialised but others on their list - such as Amadou Onana and Khephren Thuram - have gone elsewhere.

Newcastle may still fancy Kone and he has certainly been on Chelsea's radar of late.

HITC reported in March that Kone was on Chelsea's list to replace Conor Gallagher if he ended up leaving the club.

Gallagher could now join Atletico Madrid with HITC understanding that talks have been held between them and Chelsea.

Chelsea have signed Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall this summer but Kone will be a name in mind if the Blues want to replace Gallagher.

Both Chelsea and Newcastle may now be interested to learn that Kone has asked to leave Gladbach this summer.

Gladbach managing director Roland Virkus has now told Kicker that Kone communicated his plans to leave 'quite early on' in the transfer window.

Virkus still claims that there is no movement on a deal though and nothing is likely to materialise until Kone's commitments with France at the Olympic Games are over.

Virkus adds that Gladbach are under no pressure to sell and any deal has to work for all parties as clubs potentially eye a bargain.

"Manu Kone told us quite early on that he would like to leave the club," said Virkus. "But there is no movement there either. We are watching the Olympic Games and then we will have to see what happens. If something comes up, we will listen to it. But without the pressure to do it. In the end, it has to be a good fit for all parties," he added.

Kone has two years left to run on his contract and Gladbach will be driving a hard bargain.

The 23-year-old has impressed as a box-to-box player in the Bundesliga and has been hailed as a 'phenomenal' player by Mark Schwarzer.

Kone is bound to attract Premier League interest this summer with both Chelsea and Newcastle surely paying attention to his situation.
