‘Very good’: Filip Jorgensen praises £25m Chelsea teammate he’s admired from a distance

During his first interview as a Chelsea player, Filip Jorgensen has shared that he's a huge fan of a new teammate at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea confirmed on Tuesday night the signing of Filip Jorgensen, 22, from Spanish club Villarreal. The young goalkeeper has officially penned a seven-year deal at Stamford Bridge and immediately joined up with the squad during the ongoing pre-season tour of the United States.

Speaking via Football.London a few days ago, Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca praised Jorgensen as a "very good" player. It's going to be interesting to see if he can now break into the starting line-up.

Jorgensen's first-team exposure is still pretty limited, keeping seven clean sheets in 44 senior appearances for Villarreal. The Blues hierarchy spotted enough in the Denmark Under-21 international to sign him up, though.

"Robert Sanchez has been with the national team of Spain, where I live, and I followed him a bit when he was at Brighton and now Chelsea," Jorgensen told Chelsea's official website.

"I know he is a very good goalkeeper and I hope we can learn from each other and produce the best versions of ourselves together."

Who will be Chelsea's starting goalkeeper? Chelsea paid PS25m (BBC) last summer to sign Sanchez from Brighton. His first year in West London was certainly up and down, beginning the season very strongly before losing his starting position to Djordje Petrovic by the end of it.

It was claimed via The Athletic earlier in July that Sanchez is set to begin next season in Chelsea's XI. The 26-year-old gloveman has started the opening two matches of pre-season so far and is looking to establish himself under Maresca.

However, the new arrival of Jorgensen is an interesting twist and adds fresh competition. Based on how Maresca demands his goalkeepers to play out from the back, Sanchez could quickly find his starting position under threat again from the new recruit.

Leicester City goalkeeper Mads Hermansen was so influential last season in a successful team coach by Maresca, so it's so important Chelsea get this position right with how they want to build from defence.
