Chelsea FC. Chelsea miss out on win against tricky Nottingham Forest
Source:VAVEL |

Chelsea's five game winning streak was ended by a resilient Nottingham Forest, who earned a point after an eye-catching 1-1 draw.

This looked like Chelsea's toughest game to date, with Forest defending well to nullify their opponents attacking threat, and making good impact with their substitutions.

Chris Wood opened the scoring from a free kick routine before Noni Madueke responded quickly to level the score. There could have been further goals for both teams, if not for some commendable saves by both goalkeepers.

The Blues will stay in 4th going into the international break, but miss an opportunity to keep up with the top three, as they drop to four points behind leaders Liverpool.

Story of the match Enzo Maresca fielded the same team that beat Brighton last week, making eleven changes from the midweek European victory over KAA Gent.

Chelsea begun brightly, giving Forest very little time on the ball. Some early opportunities lacked a finishing touch, though.

Malo Gusto again inverted into midfield from right-back, as well as the in-form Cole Palmer, who again played in a deeper playmaking role, which allowed Chelsea to progress well into attack with a numerical advantage.

Jadon Sancho begun well on the left wing, whilst Chelsea's first real chance came from Noni Madueke cutting in from the right.

Madueke proved a tricky opponent for the Forest full-back Alex Moreno, but lacked the end product - opting to shoot when a passing option may have been the wiser decision.

Forest looked content to soak up the early pressure and strike on the counter-attack, letting their opponents keep possession.

Their defensive work should also be commended, with no way through for the Blues after half-an-hour played. Chelsea's best chances came from long-shots, or half chances from the wings, whilst Nicolas Jackson was largely isolated in the middle.

Enzo Fernandez struggled when overlapping into attack, but Palmer had time to produce some magical moments. A stunning forward pass to Madueke was able to catch Forest out, but they recovered well to clear the chance.

Forest's attacking play had been second-best but there were some late chances at the end of the first half to take the lead. Defender Murillo strode forward and powered a shot from distance, which stung the palms of Robert Sanchez.

Up the other end, Chelsea had their best chance of the half, with Enzo Fernandez given space in the box to shoot, but it was directed straight at the goalkeeper.

The home side then thought they had scored just before the break, a real scramble on the line after Madueke and Jackson pressed well to win the ball back. The winger set up Palmer to shoot but it lacked power, and Matz Sels was able to smother.

Ryan Yates then should have scored from two chances just before the whistle, but some stellar defending, including a goal-saving block from Levi Colwill, kept the score at 0-0.

Chelsea will have been frustrated not to score, but had grown into the game as they gradually broke down Forest's defensive structure.

There were no half-time changes for either manager, but Maresca will have asked for more of the same from his team.

Forest shocked the Blues as they opened the scoring early in the second half. James Ward-Prowse sent a long diagonal ball into the Chelsea box to find the head of defender Milenkovic, who could direct a header into the path of Chris Wood; the striker producing a close range finish past Sanchez.

Chelsea were not put off by the setback, immediately pushing for a leveller. Just eight minutes afterwards, they found it.

It was Palmer again, who set up Noni Madueke down the right hand side, the winger finally finding the net with a superb effort, which snuck into the bottom left corner.

Jackson could have added a second after winning the ball back in a dangerous area, but could not find the shooting angle, and Forest were able to clear their lines.

Both teams looked equally matched in this game. Forest were able to pounce on a misplaced pass from Enzo Fernandez, and earned a free-kick in a dangerous position, albeit at the cost of an injury; Morgan Gibbs-White looked in real pain and was eventually brought off for Nicolas Dominguez.

The resulting free-kick was in a strong position for specialist James Ward-Prowse, but Sanchez was positioned well to keep the danger out.

Just moments later, the free kick taker was given his marching orders after a silly handball offense resulted in a second yellow. Chelsea will have been energized by this, with over ten minutes remaining in the game, plus a large period of added time.

Maresca had also held off on making any changes until that point, but finally introduced Christopher Nkunku and Joao Felix, as his team searched for a winner.

Forest defended deep as they dropped to a back five and looked to hold out for a point, which meant a tough ask for Chelsea in the late stages of the game.

A magical touch from Palmer in the box created a great chance, but Sels was equal to it as well as the follow up as Forest hung on.

There was a fiery outbreak between both teams, after Nico Williams looked to push Marc Cucurella, who collided with his head coach. The Spainard was booked in the melee, meaning he will miss Chelsea's important trip to Anfield.

Thirteen minutes were added on in a mad game at the Bridge, with both Pedro Neto and Mykhailo Mudryk introduced as Chelsea scrambled for another goal.

Felix arguably should have scored after being set-up by his fellow countryman Neto - a free header in the box landed off target.

The Blues then found Mudryk on the counter-attack, who found Nkunku with a great cross, but his header lacked direction and Sels could react quickly to keep the scores level.

Forest were looking to keep the ball and frustrate Chelsea in the closing minutes, and did well to win some set pieces in their opponent's half.

The final big chance went to the away side, with Robert Sanchez pulling off the best save of the game, with tremendous reflexes to stretch wide and keep out a Jota Silva header.

The draw will feel like a loss for Chelsea, who could not capitalise on a man advantage to take all three points.

Chelsea will feel frustrated not to have won the game, but will be relieved to have not conceded any more.

Noni Madueke had several good chances and was rewarded for his efforts with a great goal, but flowers have to go to Robert Sanchez.

There was very little that could be done about Forest's opener, but some crucial stops late in the second half prevented further misery for the Blues.

The pick of the bunch was his superb stop right at the death; the perplexed face of Jota Silva tells the whole story, as he was amazed not to have won the game for his team.

It resulted in an expected goal tally of just 0.81 for Forest, helped thanks to the efforts of the Chelsea goalkeeper.
