What the English media are saying about Cole Palmer after England's win against Finland

Chelsea's Cole Palmer started in England's 3-1 win against Finland in the Nations League on Sunday.

Cole Palmer has made an excellent start to the season for Chelsea, already coming up with 11 goal contributions in just seven league appearances.

Former Premier League striker Glenn Murray claimed that Palmer should be starting ahead of Phil Foden, and that is exactly what happened in England's latest game.

However, the 22-year-old was not able to make too much of an impact against Finland, and the English media have since reacted to his performance.

In their match ratings piece, the Daily Express gave Palmer a six and said: "Less effective off the right-hand side. Quiet outing by his usual lofty standards."

The Standard also handed the attacking midfielder a six, stating: "Less involved than against Greece on Thursday but had one good effort which Lukas Hradecky did well to save."

The Independent was not as kind, though, giving Palmer a five after being "virtually anonymous in the first half". The newspaper then went on to add: "Brighter in the second, with a crisp strike on goal, but still nowhere near the levels produced over the last year for Chelsea. He couldn't get into the game. Replaced in the 68th minute."

Palmer has already shown what he can do in an England shirt, however, scoring against Spain in the Euro 2024 final. It is now up to Lee Carsley to find a way to get the best out of him.

Former England international Andros Townsend would include Palmer in his Three Lions team.

Cole Palmer still one of England's top five players Palmer did not make the same kind of impact he made at Euro 2024 during this international break.

Nevertheless, he is still in England's top five players alongside the likes of Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham and Bukayo Saka.

The figures that Palmer put up last season were ridiculous. He managed to score 25 goals and provide 15 assists under Mauricio Pochettino. Those are numbers of a truly elite attacker.

Like Pochettino, Enzo Maresca is also getting the best out of Palmer, perhaps even more than his predecessor. Again, Carsley needs to do the same.
