Chelsea have several England internationals in their squad right now and could have had another.

Cole Palmer, Levi Colwill and Noni Madueke were the Chelsea stars who represented England during this international break.

In the past, Reece James, Ben Chilwell and Jadon Sancho have also lined up for the Three Lions.

The first of that trio has been out injured, ruling him out of contention for an England spot, but James should train with Chelsea this week.

According to journalist Simon Phillips, Chelsea were interested in signing Gomes, who was a free agent at the time, but decided not to after having reservations about his height and physicality.

On his Substack, Phillips wrote: "SPTC sources have heard just this week that Chelsea did some extensive scouting on Gomes and were considering bringing him in as a free agent.

"Gomes was 20-years-old at that time, and we understand that there were reservations over his size and physicality, especially to play in a defensive midfield role."

Had Chelsea signed Gomes, the 24-year-old would probably have found it difficult to cement a spot in Enzo Maresca's side right now.

He would have been competing against Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez for a place in the team. Peter Crouch thinks Caicedo and Fernandez have improved this season.

"Pure quality", Manchester United legend Roy Keane said on ITV (via Daily Mail) when discussing Gomes' ball.

That moment alone showed that the Lille man has a lot of ability. On a free transfer, he could have been really good business for Chelsea.

With the likes of Caicedo, Fernandez and Romeo Lavia currently at Stamford Bridge, though, Chelsea supporters will not be losing sleep over the club not signing Gomes.

With James constantly picking up injuries, right-back is probably the position that they are most concerned about.
