Arsenal and Chelsea are among several Premier League clubs linked with a transfer bid for a young striker scoring stunners in Serie A.

It is a truth universally acknowledged that any young South American forward who starts scoring goals must be promptly linked with a whole host of Premier League clubs. So it is for a young Argentinian forward currently tearing it up in Serie A - and who is now rumoured to be a target for Arsenal, Chelsea, and several more teams besides.

According to Caught Offside, the two London clubs are among a string of sides who are interested in 20-year-old central striker Santiago Castro, who signed for Bologna last season and has quickly become the focal point of the Champions League side's attack since the start of the new campaign. A run of three superb goals in consecutive league matches has seen his stock rise precipitously, and now the big boys seem to be taking notice.

A product of Velez Sarsfield's youth programme, the striker was only picked up by Bologna, who finished fifth in Serie A last season, back in January, and initially rode the bench behind the likes of Manchester United summer signing Joshua Zirkzee, impressing in occasional cameos but making just two league starts. With Zirkzee and Marko Arnautovic gone, however, Castro has been able to make his name.

It took a few games for him bag his first goal in a comeback against Como, but that first strike promptly begat two more - a sublime long-range strike against Monza in a 2-1 win and then his best yet, a fabulous goal in a draw with Atalanta in which his touch, knack for working space and eye for goal from any distance were all neatly demonstrated.

Castro's technical skill stands out immediately. He's blessed with an instinctive first touch and a grace and ease with the ball at his feet which allow him to find a half-yard of space for a shot even when marked tightly. His passing, too, is improving. He still lacks the vision and anticipation of a true playmaker, but he can be precise and seldom mislays the ball too easily.

Then there's his confident, classy finishing. His two most notable goals have come from outside of the area, but he strikes the ball cleanly and with the confidence of the young player who hasn't yet developed the fear of missing an opportunity. It doesn't take much imagination to see why teams like Arsenal and Chelsea might be interested - or, for that matter, Aston Villa, Everton and Nottingham Forest, each of which get namechecked in Caught Offside's report.

Of course, he's young and only has eight league starts under his belt in Italy, albeit with four goals and two assists up on the stats sheet already. It's unlikely that anyone makes a move in January, but the scouting teams will be compiling their reports and watching his progress for the rest of the campaign. If he continues his impressive start, he will surely fetch a hefty price next summer.

The real question is whether he would move, even to a bigger team, without the assurance of regular football. He has that at Bologna and can even ply his trade in the Champions League, although his side's slow start to the season, coupled with the loss of manager Thiago Motta and several key players, implies that a return to Europe's top table is relatively unlikely next year. Even so, clubs like Arsenal, Chelsea and Villa may not be able to persuade him to move until he knows that he would be challenging for the starting berth that he has right now. That may give the slightly smaller clubs linked with him an edge, if he did want to move on for any reason.

Castro looks like a very genuine talent with the eye for goal and all-round skillset to develop into an elite player - but he remains a budding prospect for now, gradually coming into his own. He may well be at just about as good of a club as he could be for where he is in his career. But don't expect to wait long for Europe's biggest teams to come calling. And if that includes teams like Arsenal and Chelsea, their fans would have every right to be rather excited.
